Subject: To rent race wheels or not for IMCDA???
So Im doing my 1ST IM at Couerdelene in 2 1/2 weeks! Im hearing different opinions on renting race wheels and thought I would see what everyone on here thought? IMCDA is a fairly hilly course so the the advantage may not be that great as if it were a flat course, but Im also wondering about the lighter weight for climbing hills. I currently ride a 2008 Felt B12 with stock wheels that are "Felt Exclusive TTR3 40mm deep 20/24 spoked Triathlon Wheelset " and have never even rode any race wheels. I have avg'd about 19mph on my 3 halves, so I would expect to avg about 17'ish at CDA. So what are your thoughts? Save the money or go for it???

I would definitely not rent race wheels based on lighter weight; the advantage is improved aerodynamics and only you can answer whether it is worth it to you to rent race wheels based on time savings.  For example:

404's - about 2 seconds/km faster (about 6 minutes saved)
808's - about 2.5 seconds/km faster (about 7.5 minutes saved)
sub9/808 - about 3.5 seconds/km faster (about 10.5 minutes saved)

Yes, CDA has hills and rollers but there are HUGE sections of flats and gentle downhills where aero will make a difference.  Not making any recommendation on whether you should rent or not, just commenting on the course.  Good luck.

I rented a Zipp Disc/808 combo for IMAZ and the fun factor alone was worth the cost.

If you get a race wheel you get a higher quality wheel. Disc wheels are much much stiffer and you can get a little more power out of each pedal stroke. However, if it is windy that day you riding on a sail and it could get nasty. I rented from raceday last year with a 404/808 combo and had a blast with them and definitely felt a difference. Up to you but that was how I rewarded myself with a hard summer of training.

Personally I would only do it if I thought I could qualify for Kona, or had a bunch of IM's and was looking for a PR.  They are expensive, and you have to deal with the issues of 2 new wheels on race day and the potential issues of those wheels.

I think race wheels would help, I don't think CdA is that hilly.

if you rent wheels, be sure to bone-up on your cassette changing skills because the rear wheel doesn't come with cassette or skewer (unless they've changed policy).....you bring your own

Racedaywheels will change cassettes out for you.

I am renting a set of 606s for CdA from them. I rode a pair in a recent half and I thought they were great and it was a very windy day. Not sure it'll make a huge difference but this my first (and maybe only) IM so might as well go all out. They sure do look cool.

I did stick with clinchers as I wasn't going to take a chance on tubulars since I don't have them now so no clue how to change them. I'll check the rental tires real good before I take them but I figure your chance of a flat is the same with your own tire/tubes just as it with the rented ones. When your number is up, it is up.

I am curious, is there anything special to changing a flat with Zipp clinchers vs. a normal clincher wheel?

FYI- Race day wheels is sold out of 404/ 808 for CDA. SRAM 80 is all they have left.

Two things, both depending on how deep the wheel is:

1) Your tire levers may not be long enough to reach the spokes to hook them in.  It's still doable to change the tire - just more irritating.

2) If you're using valve extenders, be familiar with them.  It's probably good to carry a spare in case you crack or bend one while changing a tire.
