Subject: HR is spiking high during run...
i am not sure if my garmin is having problems or its me....i have a garmin 310xt with the soft HR strap...

i had an injury in feb so have not ran until about 1 week ago (VERY VERY minimal running), however I have done swimming and biking, my race pace is roughly 7 mpm.  anyways i started last week, continued to this week....obviously my endurance has decreased and i fully understand this...anyways....

yesterday I ran 4 miles, after the first mile, my HR spiked to z5, I stoped, took of the strap, put it back on, went down to z3.  after mile 2 of the run, my HR crept up to z4 and just stayed there.

the entire run was slow pace I was running a 9:30 mile pace....in february prior to injury my slow pace was 8:30 and I could run that comfy in z2.

could it be the heat that is affecting me?  i am not sure at this point by my running is abysmal and any run over 4 miles is simply complete torture....

I am having similar issues. I had an injury last year and didn't run much until this year. I was running sub 20 5K. Now I can get HR spikes into high zone 4 on a five mile run at a 12min pace. I think the heat is a factor as well as loss of fitness. Each sport has specific fitness. Running and biking help but you still have run to run fast.

I think it will come back. I hope that by the end of the year I will clicking off those fast 6:30 4 mile tempo runs again. We will see.

Stay consistent. Don't get discouraged. Run More!

Very minimal running since February... Miami... the heat... absolutely!  I'm sure all of these things are affecting your pace right now.  My average pace during the South FL summer is anywhere from 20-30 slower per mile.  You probably need to expect even more than that right now because you haven't really been running.

How are you with using RPE for a while?  I think that you are going to have to try to ignore your Garmin for a bit.  I tend to go by RPE a lot during our hot summer months.  Keeping my core cool has been helping a lot.  I make 3-4 mile loops around a central location (where I keep a cooler) and stuff ice down my bra, shorts and under my cap.  It works like a charm for about 1.5 miles when it melts away.  Then, I just loop back around again and re-ice.

i think i might actually hit the gym to try to do a short 20 min run see how that goes....

yesterday my run was absolutely frustrating....i left at 6:15 pm and it was still 89 degrees, i had to stop to get a new bottle of water after 3 miles and was soaked in sweat...i guess my pace will be slower...

yeah this is a great idea...i have a 70.3 and i was just discouraged yesterday....i guess I will just keep it shorter for the time being.

i think the heat, injury, gaining a few lbs....none of this is helping that is for sure....i might try the treadmil today just to see how running indors will feel...

Only 89F but the Heat Index was a lot higher.  I left work at 9:30pm last night for a 6 mile run home and the heat index was 92F and I'm 2.5-3 hours north of you (which means nothing this time of the year).

I too am recovering from an injury and just started running again ~3-4 weeks ago and am going by RPE only.  HRM in the summer for me is only for fun but during last nights trot top of Z1/low Z2 was at ~9:15 pace, compare that to ~8:00 pace in 50F this past winter in 1/2 mary shape.

It sounds normal. You have lost your running fitness. It will take some time to regain it. Once you've been running regularly again for several weeks this likely won't be an issue.

I live in Florida and have had no injuries. I have a three year base and am running :20 slower per mile than I was in Feb. I travel to the northeast a few times during the year and always run faster there. Temperature definitely effects me.

I can't say if this is the same problem as mine, but some of the HR strap that comes with the 310 have problems with static that form when you exercise.

I have read a lot about it because I wanted to make sure that my HR strap was really broken before sending it in.

Just to give you an example of what I am saying. Yesterday I went to the track for my intervals, first 10 minutes my HR is in between 140 and 160, then at some point when I start my intervals it jumped to 220-240 and stayed there. Even with the cool down in between each intervals, and during the cool down at the end. It just stayed there.

No way I can survive that kind of HR for 30 minutes

I have this happen but I think I've figured it out, at least for me. I am training for Ironman Lake Placid so being "out of shape" is not the issue. My HR monitor will suddenly spike up just like you described. What it is, is my heart is having extra beats or beating a little erratically, and the HR starts counting those extras and displaying what my HR would be if I kept that up for a minute or more. Even if I only have a couple extra beats, it picks them up and projects that high HR. I've talked to a cardiologist who said this is common, especially in people 40 and over, and especially when you exercise (even if you're in great shape), but that most people don't notice it. Athletes do, because we wear monitors. If it freaks you out, it can't hurt to get a doctor to check you out.
