Subject: Funny Running LT Field Test Results?
So, I just did a LT Field Test in order to determine my updated running Lactate Threshold. It's been a couple months since I last did one because I have been dealing with ITBS, and I have been in therapy for that. Thankfully, I'm back to running, although I don't feel like I'm back to my old shape. Anyway, I got home, and the average of the final 20 minutes of the 30 minute run was 215. That seems high for me since my last test was at 173. I don't mean to compare numbers with anyone, but I'm wondering if I should even trust this. My biggest concern is that my HR monitor may have been off. My fear is that the synthetic shirt I was wearing was causing static electricity, and that messed it up. Anyway, any advice? Do I go with the number for now, or do I stick with the old number? It's real annoying to have finished a hard 30 minute run only to feel like it was for nothing. At least I can say I did a good 30 minute tempo run, I guess.

Thanks.

I doubt it was the synthetic shirt causing the problem but I also doubt the number is correct.  I'd re-do it in a week or two.

I doubt those results are correct.

Testing is tough to bad results aren't going to be helpful but it was an awesome workout that will help with your fitness.

My HR monitor started giving goofy numbers on and off for a couple of weeks before the battery just died (in the chest strap).  Maybe you should replace the battery before you run the next test.

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm going to ignore these results and do the test again in the next couple weeks. And, I'll definitely look into replacing the battery, although it's really only about 6 months old. The only reason I mentioned the synthetic shirt is because I've noticed that I get strange numbers when I go for a bike ride on a windy day and I'm wearing a tech jersey. It seems to build up static electricity. But, I didn't think it was so possible to do that when running. I don't run that fast for it to be that windy.

I was surprised that the battery had died, as it wasn't that old either.  My thinking was that I was not drying it off when I took if off, so maybe the moisture between the pickups was keeping it "on" a lot longer.  Maybe that's dumb, but I dry it off now and set it on a different shelf than the watch.

What brand of HRM? As other poster said, some stay on when wet or when the electrodes are connected.

Wear the heart rate monitor between now and when you repeat the test to see what kink of numbers you get.  If you get wildly fluctuating numbers, I would suspect a battery issue.
