I know that they literally mean front of pack, middle of pack, and back of pack.  But what I'm wondering is what does pack refer to?  In other words, is the pack your age group or all of the racers in the field?

OK, being more specific to me.  Below are my results from my first triathlon, an Olympic distance.  Did I finish FOP, MOP, or BOP?

Overall: 171/516
Clydes division: 5/17
Age group: 18/26 (That's were I would have placed if I wasn't in the Clydes division.)

Depends on who you want to rate yourself against.

I'd wager that MOP for age groups 25 - 39 is probably MOP for the race overall.  But MOP for Elites is going to be FOP for the overall.  And vice versa for higher AGs or Clydes.

Who do you want to hold yourself up against?  Are you 47 and ranked well in your AG but not overall?

You are the FOP overall, and FOP clydes.
At the edge of MOP/BOP in your AG.  So technically your are in the FOBOP , or BOMOP in your AG.

I say you are open to define yourself however you like.

I generally avoid these terms, because they are arbitrary and really, what does it matter? You have your times, and your place(s). Do we need more?

This is a good example of why these "categories" are entirely subjective...OP was 33% from the top O/A, but 30% from the bottom of his AG.  So closer to the bottom of his AG than he was to the top O/A...but that gets translated by this poster as "FOP overall" and "BOMOP in...AG."

There's no definition for any of this (O/A is particularly skewed because both genders are included)...and how you do will change based on the size of the race, who shows up, and whether you choose to race Clyde or not.

It depends on the course.

MOP for a course like Savageman (crazy hard climbs) is not the same as MOP for a race like Diamondman (mostly flat).

My advice? Race against yourself.

You can use them to refer to either--they are just an adjective. Personally, I tend to use them in terms of OA placing.

As to what percentage of the field falls into each one... it depends on who you ask and what the field is like. I'd probably say 15/70/15, if I had to pick one...but again, depends on the race and the field.

MOP is of course a mathematical calculation determined to be 3x the standard deviation +/- the median time.

This is exactly what I wanted to show - wherever you're in whatever "pack", it's how YOU see it.
There is no definite line as to which position is the start of a "pack".  And it's not like there is hardware for the first 3 positions of the MOP and the first 3 for the BOP.  So why categorize?

That said, I am at the BOFOMOP and would like to move up to the MOMOP.

In that race? I think you can do the math and see what percentile you fall into and answer your question. IN regards to where that'd put you in the scheme of life? Hard to say without knowing the competition level of the field, difficulty of the course, etc.

I'd spend more time worrying about how to live up to your potential, as opposed to moving to meet some arbitrary percentage in a field.

Yeah, let me clarify that these definitions aren't all that important to me.  This race was three weeks ago and I was just reading some other posts about FOP, MOP, and BOP as was thinking through were I'd be in those terms... and I wasn't sure if people saying those descriptions were meaning in terms of overall or age group.  That's why I asked.

FWIW, I consider my performance SLOP.

However, congrats on your solid performance.  How did the wetsuit treat you?

Unless I DNS or DNF, I'm FOP of MY group of three.  Me, myself, and I.

Some say 1/3,1/3,1/3

Others are 15%/70%/15%

I have seen
FOFOP
MOFOP
BOFOP
FOMOP
etc....

Whatever lets you sleep at night.  I guess.

Pretty much true in my case.  I want to beat the previous performance.  I was upset at my 2nd OLY because my legs were shot from running my first half mary a week earlier.  However, it was 12 min faster than my first OLY so it cheered me up a little.

Well lets see here. I could think of plenty of people (ladies) I would like to hold myself up against. But I would prefer not to hold myself up against any of the spandex clad, sweaty dudes in my AG.

Heh. Good choice. :D

FOP I consider to be top 10% of the field, regardless of where you finish in your age group. I've won my AG before but been almost dead middle of the entire field OA. I've also finished in the top 5% of the field and still been 5th in my AG. :D

After FOP, does it really matter? You're out there competing, having fun and enjoying life. Doesn't get any better than that.

I agree with these parameters.  I also think that generally people are refering to overall place, but... you could also use this to define yourself in your age group.

I guess I split them up evenly, 1-33% FOP, 34-66% MOP and 67-100% BOP
I try and preface which group I'm talking about... overall... males... age group... etc.

So you might be at the BOMOFOP

Front of the pack is where you hardly see anyone on the course, and hope not to get lost.

Middle of the pack is when you see people all around you.

Back of the pack is where you see alot of people in front of you but not alot behind you.  You also hope that the scorekeepers haven't left yet.

PennState - 2010-07-12 7:05 PM  I agree. FOP is top 10% in AG or overall. MOP is 11%-70% BOP is bottom 30% These are just my subjective views and CLEARLY not the absolute truth.

earth has regained its proper polarity after a chaotic period of instability- Fred and I finally disagree again. Phew!

My completely objective and empirically based research shows that while FOP is indeed the top 10%, MOP is 11%-100%, with BOP consisting of slugs glued to the couch who DNS and those who have, quite regrettably, passed on.

The research was limited to the purview of my 2009 results where I was, uh, last in my age group. Which, by the way, I consider to be solidly middle of the pack.
