USA Ultra Triathlon is bringing their Double IRON to Tampa next March!

Distances are 4.8 mile swim, 224 mile bike ride, and 52.4 mile run.  The event will be held in North Tampa (bike and run at Flatwoods). It is an overnight, nonstop event - an experience unlike any other.

I scouted locations with the race director last year. I like this closed-to-traffic bike and run venue much better than the one in Virginia for the obvious reason that the loop is closed to vehicular traffic. Not to mention that it's in my hometown!

Volunteering and crewing is a unique and exciting experience. It can also be crazy fun for those with a healthy sense of humor.  If you're interested, let me know.

As for participating, I'll leave that to hardy folks like Madcow to explain.

I thought the whole Double IM was crazy enough before I saw that the loops are sooooooo short! My God, what a hellish time that will be!!!

It's kind of surreal and tranquil. You are allowed to have pacers on the run and that makes it more special for everyone, and less drudgery for the athlete. I remember running at midnight under the moonlight with Tony (aluminum1) and talking about relationships, family, careers. I don't remember many of my runs over the last 5 years, but I remember that one clearly.

It is a very supportive, family environment. Crews chat with each other at 3am while there's not much to do besides either sleep, prepare hydration or food for the athlete, or just wait for your turn to pace.

To be sure, you must have your mental wits about you. It requires a great deal of mental endurance, not just physical endurance.

I'm in. Looking forward to it. I was supposed to do the VA one this year but Tampa fits the schedule much better. Will you be there Renee? It's been a long time, will be nice to see you again.

Excellent points about support and pacers! From that point of view, it would be very nice.

But, you're also right about the mental endurance: Make sure not to forget to bring the Mental Toughness!!!

Ha! Prize money????!

Every finisher gets a shirt and plaque. First through 3rd get a jacket.

In 2007 there were 3 women that signed up for the double. One women didn't finish under the cutoff. At the awards banquet, she got the 3rd place plaque but didn't get the finishers shirt because she didn't finish. She was upset about the shirt and came back, tried 2 more times and finally finished it in 2009. She now has a shirt and can finally relax.

It is a completely different atmosphere than IM. One person finished the double and got a tattoo of the double logo. The race director, Steve, thought that was the craziest thing he had ever heard of. "Can you believe someone would get a tattoo of the race logo?"

Priceless.

BTW, the loops in Virginia were shorter than those in Tampa.

Your pacers can almost just stand in the middle of the loop and just turn in a circle as they talk to you.  They'd need more of a swivel chair than the ability to run.

Maybe one day they'll have a Double IM here in Colorado... just maybe not in Leadville.... maybe something a little lower like in the Boulder/Denver area.  The biking and running could both go up into the mountains then.

Do the race directors keep the loops so short because of logistical purposes?  I'm mainly thinking medical reasons more than permits and stuff like that. Perhaps it's a difference of ultra runners being used to supplying their own caravans, support crews, pacers, and being out in the middle of no where in the middle of the night on trails, but triathlete's (even up to the IM distance) are used to fully supported races, flat courses, and road running.

The Esprit Triathlon (Montreal) is 41 (4.4 km) laps on the bike and 9 (4.6 km) laps on the run...

Even crewing for this kind of thing is an endurance event. I LOVED it. (although I am not cut out for sleeplessness!)  Some of my best BT/Tri memories were at madcow's first double, with Renee and others.  In spite of being a thousand kerjillion times harder than a reg IM or tri, the people who do it are inversely laid back, chill, and unpretentious.

How do you go about becoming a support crew or pacer for someone?  I'm not crazy enough (yet) to attempt this race, but would love to be there to see it done, and if I'm there, I may as well do something.

C-Dub...go to the website above and email Steve Kirby. He's the race director and a really cool person. He'd tell you how and what you could do to help!! Look forward to seeing you there!! If you end up being my counter you better not mess up my laps!!!
