So I wanted to get my 19 mile bike ride done but I dreaded the afternoon heat.  So I told myself to take it easy and not to kill myself.  Four miles into the ride I see a group of bikers about a half mile ahead of me, which I usually have the road to myself so this is interesting.  The competitive side kicks in and I push to see if I can catch them.  So during my ride I start passing some of the bikers and they are turning their heads to see who is this guy on their ride.  So I caught the group and made my turn at the half way mark and push it back to home.  The second half of the ride is kicking my butt but I don't want to slow down now.  My water bottle feels like it came off the stove (note: put in freezer before next ride).  So I finish with a good time but man is was hot, I know HTFU.
My wife says I am too competitive and it will kill me one day.  I guess I am not alone by reading a lot of the threads on BT.
Hard for me to hit the slow and easy switch in my head, do others have the same issue?

I don't have that much of an issue myself but I run with a guy that does.  We will be out for an easy run at lunch, go around a corner on the trail and spot someone running ahead of us and the first thing that pops into my head is "great, there goes the easy run" - my buddy will just instinctively pick up the pace in chase mode.  He says he doesn't even realize he's doing it.

Same way. For whatever reason, when I see riders ahead of me, it urges me on to go after them. Even if I'm already riding at strong tempo.

But I will say this, I dont go after riders that blow by me....I don't try to draft (which is the ultimate sin on the roads, done by way too many)...I just let them go, and I look at their gear to figure what "speed advantage" they have purchased that is separating them from me....certainly, it can't be innate ability!...hahahaha

I ride my own ride and ignore all others around me.  I never get the urge to catch up to strangers.  Now, if a stranger lands on my wheel after I pass them I sprint the hell out of there.  Go get a free ride with someone you know.

Nope. If I'm marginally gaining I might pick it up a bit to keep from being in the draft zone for more than 15 seconds, though

I've never felt the need to have to pass everyone and honestly don't understand it. I realize people do it, just not how I'm wired, I guess.

I'm nearly 40 and have learned that most of the time it's not worth it! From time to time I'll pick up the pace to catch someone but really what's the point? I usually have a set workout in mind before I start and end up sticking with that plan. If it catches or passes other folks great...if not it's fine.

I am completely unfamiliar with the "catching up" phenomenon that you speak of.

There's a pretty common saying that sums this up:

Most people go too hard on their easy days and too easy on the hard days...

I definitely have the problem of wanting to be in front. Something about having someone in front of me on the bike says, gotta pass 'em!

But it does serve me well as I am a terrible swimmer, there are always lots of people in front of me. Makes for a good bike split!

I never have the option to catch people on the bike in front of me, i have never seen anyone to chase Frown.  On the run though it is a different story.  It does not matter how far they are in front of me or age or ability, they are being passed.  The only thing that i hate is when i think that they are a fast individual in front of me then i notice they are going much slower than me.  I am not an a$$ about it or if someone blows by me it is not a race too me though.  I like the chase of it and just reeling someone in.  My 1/2 iron distance a month ago or so i was almost last out of the water due to a dislocated shoulder (450 competing).   My shoulder was killing me, but i chased down over a 150 people on the bike and run and loved seeing everyone in front of me.   I will never beable to chase down that many people again.
