Rogillio - 2010-07-30 10:08 AM I see people at the pool in the locker room washing out their swimsuits/jammers in the sink.  Presumably washing out the cholrine will prolong the life of your jammers or swimsuit.  I have never done this and simply throw mine in the laundry basket and they get washed in warm water and dried in the dryer.  My jammers last about a year.

So how much life does one buy if they 'take care' of their swimsuit?

~Mike

do they make women's swimsuits like that?  mine are see-through in 3 months with all the rinsing and instruction following in the world.  gah.

sungirl919 - 2010-07-30 3:18 PM don't know if female suits are made of the same stuff (I will assume so), I've rinsed mine out every time and every so often it goes in the wash.  Hang dry.  Mine's going on 5 years!!!  I will admit, it's starting to get a little less "springy".

what the heck suit do you own!!!  i want one of those!!!!

My first suit is almost shot and I've only been swimming regularly since last December.  That one got the most use and in the two most heavily chlorinated pools.  I would rinse it in the shower at the pool and then wash it in the washer at home with my towel.  Hang dry.  Its bad enough that it's probably time to retire it completely.

My other two suits are exactly the same suit, but they are in much better shape (and only a little newer).  I treat them the same, but I now swim in a saline pool and it's not nearly as hard on the lycra.

In the gym, I wear the suit in the shower when I was my hair and upper-body, remove and rinse, spinner...

Nylon/Polyester for me, not Lycra.

On a separate note, if you ever consider getting a kinky body-piercing, consider the extra wear & tear that metal puts on clothing...

As a competition swimmer from 3rd grade all through college and now well into the Senior Olympic Swimming age group, I have never washed my suits.  Mostly Speedos.  Most workouts during the season were three times a day, and that meant putting on a wet suit.  Very cold and uncomfortable.

Washing consisted of rinsing it off in the shower and squeezing (not wringing), the excess water, then laying flat to dry as much as possible.

I don't think I ever wore a suit out.  Mostly lost them or just wanted new design.

I guess I could start wearing jammers, but then how would I blend my legs biker tan line.

I wash mine by doing multiple loops in a 25yrd pool 3 -4 times a week. They then get rinsed in the out door shower while still on my body. My pool is at a local high school and they get a little upset if I take them off during my outdoor shower. They then get squeezed out kind of then left to dry in my car while Im at work for the next 10 hrs. This system seems to work just fine for my jammers. No one ever wants to share a lane with me though. Cant figure that one out.

Using a pair of polyester jammers right now and they are holding up brilliantly.  Wear them in the shower for a little bit and sometimes will hit them with a little hand soap in the sink, ring them out and hang to dry @ home.  Did a little pool work for my inlaws with gobs of chlorine in their pool for an algae problem... faded the threading a hair otherwise they still look almost new.  They seem to be holding up great compared to previous Lycra/spandex jammers I've used.

Mine get rinsed well in the shower after every swim, and the only time they ever go in the wash is if my wife is doing the laundry, and grabs them off the edge of our tub (where I lay them to dry), because she thinks they are tri shorts.

BTW, I do the same thing with my goggles, sportcount, and watch.

lisac957 - 2010-07-30 9:28 AM I rinse mine out in the shower after every swim, and put it in the washing machine about once every 4 or 5 swims.
Always hang dry.

mmrocker13 - 2010-07-30 9:14 AM Wait... you WASH your (training) swimsuit? Like in the wash?

LMFAO!!! My fiance questioned this "washing" thing similarly...he thought it was ridiculous that you actually wash it on a regular basis. For us gear-heads, he's not far off... machine-washing is harsh, and drying is basically murder.

I'm a newbie who normally desperately seeks ALL advice about everything...but as someone obsessed with high-end gear, I encourage you all to read labels. Normally I just rinse my clothing in cold water and detergent. I read on a $90 pair of 2XU shorts that I should barely LOOK at them lol!!!  Seriously, they're not supposed to be "wrung," and not even "allowed to dry on themselves." I'm not totally sure what that means. I paid enough for my first super-cool, sexy tri shorts that I treat them like cotton candy :-) Just thought you should look at your labels too...you've certainly paid enough!!!

My first suit was a pair of Lycra jammers and they vaporized in a couple of months. Next I wore through some tri shorts in a bit less than a year before I realized I should just use those for biking and racing. Now I swim train in short square cut poly trainer suits, no more expensive than many speedo style suits but with just a little more material. Though now that I think about it, the difference in coverage is pretty minimal.
