Subject: DRUNK DRIVER KILLS CYCLIST IN VEGAS
Yesterday, a drunk driver hit, and killed a member of our cycling group, and then drove away from the scene.

He was caught down the street and arrested and is now charged with felony DUI, but our friend is gone.  Riding in the bike lane was no saving grace, nor were the signs telling motorists to "share the road".

Tonight the local news covered the vigil and our group of riders attending to pay respects.  Too bad that is the only way for us to get coverage.  Where are they when we are out volunteering and cleaning up the Red Rock Park trying to keep our riding area nice.

I ride this same route constantly, it could have easily been me on the ground, or any of us for that matter.

I know Vegas is a vacation, party town, and alcohol is the drink of choice, but actions have consequences, and we regular people live here too.

RIP old friend

Sorry to hear about your loss.  I've lost many good friends over the past few years and understand the feeling.

It's scary to think that this could happen anytime we head out to enjoy our hobby.  Unfortunately, there are idiots all over the country and this isn't specific to Vegas or any other locale...

I just hope he spends the rest of his life behind bars.  Doesn't bring your friend back, but this man doesn't deserve to have a life after this.

That is so sad.  Here in Tucson they take the bike of the person who was killed and paint it all white and put it where the person was struck down.  It's a reminder every time I go by one.

Terrible news...  Sorry.

Where and when was this at?  My usual route is from north Summerlin to Red Rocks (and beyond) most of the time...

Talked to some of my cyclist friends about this just now.  I heard it was at Del Webb and Rampart.  Scary, that's about 1/2 mile of my house and the route I take on EVERY ride...

I have to admit, Rampart always spooks me with the speed  people drive it, even AFTER they put in the bike lane.  It's a dangerous street, and obviously worse when people are drunk driving.

They actually do this around the world.

Not sure I would want the reminder if it were one of my friends though.

You know it Kido.  All of us in the northwest ride Villa Ridge for the climb.  Just the other day I went up the hill over to Red Rock out to Blue Diamond and then back Alta and then home down Rampart to Cheyenne, right there.  Not even a bike path out by Sun Coast Casino.  It felt very dangerous.

That is truly devastating. I'm so sorry for your loss. It could have been anyone, anywhere, and it's horrifying that it happened, period.

OMG- you just sent shivers down my spine.  I'm a Tucsonan and I've passed so many of those painted bikes, and never gave them any thought.  I guess it's a nice tradition and reminder to us all.
