Last month I asked for advice on training for a 13 year old. I thought you might like to see results.

400 meters 4:44 (seemed a little short)
Missed turnaround at mile 10 (youth distance) and rode adult length (15 miles) 58:25
Run (1.5) 9:28

He was second out of the water and was in first place quickly on the bike leg...before he missed the turnaround... He did great, although he was really bummed. The race was small and not very well organized. Turns were not staffed, rather there were signs, which he missed. There were not many volunteers even in the transition areas, there were lots of safety issues. Runners didn't even know where to finish as the finish was at the same place bikes were coming in at. Kind of mass chaos! However all things aside, it was a great day for him and I can't wait to see how he does on his next race. He's becoming quite an athlete.

Nice! My 13-yo twins do their first big-boy triathlon Saturday. They've done kid's tris before, but this (super-sprint 200m/8mi/2mi) will be their first with the adult field.

Did he have fun?  Be careful.  Once he's hooked it's all over!!!

I'm so jealous that he's getting into it at that age.  What an opportunity to develop such great habits so early.  Congrats to him and best of luck!

Once he's hooked, instead of bugging you for a video game, hes going to start bugging you for carbon fiber frames and disc wheels!

Once he's hooked...

My son placed 3rd in his AG in a kids' 200m, 5 mi., 2 mi. event on Saturday. On Sunday, we watched the Kona Iron Man. Today, at mile 20 of a 30 mile ride for ice cream, he said, "I want to do an Ironman."

That's great!  I think I responded to your first thread -- familiar territory for my family since my 17 year old has been racing since she was 12.  It is odd to realize that at 40+ races she has more experience than most grownups.  I think it's kept her grounded during adolescence and too tired to get into trouble -- our arguments are about race distances and safe training not bad grades or partying!  And a previous poster is right -- Christmases/birthdays become easier because triathlon gear makes a great gift!  Hope he will continue to love training and racing and experiences a lot of success!

We've done the road bike purchase (Christmas). We've already decided that the next purchase will be a cyclometer...so he won't pass the turnaround again! LOL
