Overall Rank = 55/149
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 9/21
Pre-race routine:

Alarm at 5:30am. Cliff bar, 1 1/2 cups of coffee. Drove to race site, checked in, organized transition and at 7:10 went down to the water to warm-up in the lake.
Event warmup:

Swam around for about 15 minutes.
Swim
  • 31m 21s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

My best ow swim to date, although I was hoping for something 2 to 3 minutes faster.
What would you do differently?:

My swimming was probably the bright spot of this race for me, I have to spend more time with my training to improve my strength and my mechanics.
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Long distance to the transition area from the lake. t1 time includes me walking to t1 because I was feeling a little sick. Not sure what went wrong but it was unpleasant.

29th overall rank in t1
Bike
  • 1h 19m 51s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 18.63 mile/hr
Comments:

I struggled on the bike today. It was very frustrating. My two issues were the 6 pounds that I've gained since the EagleMan, and the fact that I haven't been biking a lot since the Eagle either. Climbing with this extra weight was tough. I descended well, and rode the flats well, but there was so much climbing on this course that it became my limiter.
What would you do differently?:

Step up my training and get my weight down. Not much I could have done to fix things on race day. I also started some negative "self talk" as I began to realize that the race was getting away from me.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Great transition. Very fast, the other bright spot to my day. I have this nailed down.

overall 32 in t2
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Run
  • 54m 56s
  • 6.22 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Bike climbs stole my legs from me. I was hoping for something about 5 minutes faster, but my bad day, the heat and humidity, a tough course, and a bad attitude all conspired against me for an average time.
What would you do differently?:

I am going to start carrying my water with me. I think there will be a big advantage to being able to drink when I want to, and not having to slow down to drink from a dixie cup.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

My weight, my recent training intensity, and some hydration issues. I was really down on myself by the end of the run. It made me have to re-think my Ironman goal. I was just so frustrated and angry.

Event comments:

The condition of the roads was just unsafe. I am surprised that there weren't any big problems. The only way I will do this race again is if I can include the family with some camping at the race site park before hand.

Good job, tough distance! I would kill for your run in an olympic. Actually, I would be happy with your time in a plain ole 10K

Wow, tough race. That has to be one of the hardest races around here and Sunday's weather wasn't too exercise friendly either. Sorry to read that you didn't come out as well as you hoped, but it also sounds like you took away some good lessons from this one, so it shouldn't feel like a wasted effort. Matt, you are a very good triathlete and I believe that you can achieve your Ironman goal (seeing as I know what it is). Don't let one race dissuade you from that.
