Subject: 2 long training runs in same week ok?
Ok, I know some IM and full marathon participants may read this...but for me, this be a lot of runnin' for me leggers!

I was supposed to run 10 miles this weekend for my 1/2 marathon training. However, family weekend getaway benched any hopes of a long run. (I didn't even get in a short run between logistics and fatigue from long days).

Anyhow - what if I run say 8 miles Tuesday am and then Sunday, get in 11 miles as scheduled. Too much? Skip the 8'er and just do the 11 or go back to 10? Race is September 19th.
Thanks O'wise ones of BT!

not sure there's a right or wrong with this one, it really all depends on how you feel, how long 8mi is for you, what it takes out of you, and what your recovery time is like.  Of all the runs in prep for a long race, the long runs are the most important.  As long as the 8 and 11 milers aren't too close for you, and they're probably not, you're good to go.  If running 8 miles leaves you sore and fatigued for a week, then perhaps back off a mile or two.

enjoy your run(s

i personally have always done very well with a mid long run per week in addition to my long run.

at my peak mileage this winter i had a long run between 14-17 and a mid long around 9-11 miles.
a few runs of 6-8, and a few of 3-4

X2

Except IMO overall volume is as important or more than the long run. All the other running supports the longer runs and if the long run is too high a percentage of your weekly mileage it loses its effectiveness.

What other running will you be doing in addition to the two runs you've mentioned?

thanks for the replies! good schtuff.
To answer your question, Don, I will also run 4, 2, and 3 - give or take a half mile - following a program that does not include midweek mid level distances. Last time I did follow Hal Higdon's plan and did run mid-distance runs mid week but this plan does not have them.
Now that tri season is done, I think my recovery should be faster.

Just did a 10.3 miler on Friday morning followed by 15.5 miles this AM (out of 40.8 total for the week).  Wasn't as fresh for the 15.5...but that may have been more a function of the 50 miles on the bike yesterday than the 10 miles run on Friday.  (I seldom do two double-digit runs 48 hours apart, though.)

You should be fine as long as you can recover from the 8 miler.

I had similar circumstances a couple months ago.  I dropped one of my mid week runs to make room for more recovery.  No problem getting the second long run done.  Good luck!

I would think it would be fine based on your logs. Especially with a good amount of time in between. Go for it.

Should not be a problem if you have a decent base under you. I run 4 times a week with my long run on Saturday or Sunday AM. My long run is always at least 10 but generally 13-15. I often run an 8 miler on Tuesdays. Never a problem.
