Age Group Rank = 3/5
Pre-race routine:

A pot of coffee about 2 hrs prerace
1/2 Claritin about 2 hrs prerace
2 Advil about 1 hr prerace
1 banana about 1 hr prerace
Stretched about 1 hr prerace
Aired up tires and set up transition
Swim
  • 09m 20s
  • 425 yards
  • 02m 12s / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Good transition with exception of a short struggle with biking gloves. Still not sure if they are worth wearing during a race.
What would you do differently?:

Gloves or not?

Bike
  • 41m 22s
  • 12.7 miles
  • 18.42 mile/hr
Comments:

Started drinking as soon as possible. Drank about every 3 miles and took one last drink as I was leaving the transition area. Had undiluted Gatorade only.
Best time of my age group.
What would you do differently?:

Try to stay on the drops the whole way. When I got winded I got on the risers for a slight rest and possibly a drink.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Took one last drink of Gatorade before starting out on the run.

Run
  • 31m 17s
  • 3.12 miles
  • 10m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Got a cramp in my right calf about 25 steps from my bike. Stopped and massaged it out--took about 30 seconds. Happened again about the 1/4 mile mark. Massaged it again and didn't have any more trouble or pain at all in it for the rest of the run.
What would you do differently?:

Stretch calves good prerace and concentrate on heel down while biking. That seems to help.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat on the grass in the shade of a big tree and stretched. Drank ice water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough swim or run training.
Not enough time on the drops.
Cramp in right calf.

Event comments:

Like the pool swim and the flat, fast bike and run courses.
Most of the competitors were at my ability level.
