Subject: Sharp foot pain
Hello,

After my run on monday, I got a sharp pain in the outside of my right foot. It is right behind the toe joint of my pinkie toe. I haven't run since then, but it's still bothering me walking around on it. It only hurts when weight or pressure is applied, and it is fairly localized. It's not a specific point, but a fairly small area, maybe the size of a couple of finger tips. I run in vibram five fingers, and have for about a year. I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas as to what it might be? It onset after one specific run, and it wasn't anything more than I usually do. The run was over a mix of pavement and gravel/dirt type trails. Since the shoes are so minimalist, I was thinking it might be as simple as I stepped on a rock or something like that and gave myself a really good bruise, maybe even a bone bruise, but I don't remember specifically stepping on anything. There isn't any swelling or visible bruising, but I have always tended to not show bruises very much. Moving my foot does not affect the pain at all, it's only when walking (and presumably running) when that part of my foot bears weight and a little bit if I press firmly on it. Any ideas? Thanks

Could be a variety of things...bruise, small ligament, stress reaction/fracture. I would give it a few days, ice, rest as much as you can and if it doesn't get better go see a Foot specialist. Sharp pains that are pretty localized usually indicate a stress fracture, but you never know. I am recovering from a Metatarsal ST.Fx so just speaking from my experience. Hope it isn't and you recover quickly!

It sounds very similar to my situation 8 weeks ago.  I had a stress fracture.  I sure hope this is not your problem.  Best of luck!

Well, I don't think it is a stress fracture. It's a little more spread out than the one I had in my shin four or five years ago, but the pain is somewhat similar. I decided to go for a run today and see how it felt (5 days off, some icing, anti inflam.). It doesn't feel any different than before I ran. I was just going to do an out and back so I could turn around if it was bothering me, and I ended up doing 8 miles, the first and last mile on hard surfaces, the other six on the beach, and my foot feels fine. It really didn't bother me when I ran, but still hurts to press on or if I roll my foot out when walking. I am going to keep an eye on it, but the running definitely didn't make it worse. Weird.
