Total Time = 1h 01m
Overall Rank = 01/47
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 1/????
Pre-race routine:

Packed the night before, woke up early to read the news and then off to the race. I like to arrive at races really early and just hang out in my car to mentally prepare.
Event warmup:

None, that will come back to haunt me later.
Swim
  • 04m 51s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really didn't like the idea of swimming in a pool but loved the idea of only having to swim 300 yards. I felt pretty comfortable after the first 150 yards. We weren't allowed to do flip turns for fear of hitting another swimmer. So you just touched the wall and pushed off. I was happy with everything.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do more intervals in the water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Jumped out of the pool and ran to my bike. I decide to skip my biking shoes and ride in my running shoes. This transition was a little bit slow not too bad. I ran out of the transition area with my bike but the timers never got my number. I am a watch hound though and I time everything. Don't leave home without it. (My watch that is)
What would you do differently?:

Don't forget to bring my Tri-belt. I had to pin my number on my shirt.
Bike
  • 34m 31s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.86 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't have a lot of confidence starting on the bike because I didn't know the course. I didn't expect to be this far up in the pack. I passed 4 people right away off the bike and I was afraid to pass the 4th place guy because I didn't see anyone in front of him.
What would you do differently?:

Stretch before the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

This was a great transition. Wearing my running shoes on the bike really helped out here. I ran my bike up to the rack, took my helmet off and put my visor on. I then started my run. I was able to get out of the transition area before the 3rd place guy did.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 18m 38s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 05m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I was able to catch the #2 guy right away on the run. He started right behind me on the swim so I knew I had to put some distance between me and him. I felt comfortable on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Talking with other Triathletes. I ended up knowing a number of people at the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing.

Event comments:

It was a very nice race. It was well organized and I won a $25 gift card to Tri and Run. This is where I buy my shoes from. I just bought a new pair last Tuesday. I guess I should have waited. I will need another pair in 3 months.

They messed up my swim time. They added an extra minute on the race results but had my overall time correct.
Suit:
Course: We swam in a pool and started out in 30 second intervals. The guy behind me started 30 seconds after I did and my worse fear was that he would catch me and I would cause him to have a bad swim if I didn't get out of his way. I was a lot more nervous than I thought I would be. All I had to do was get out of the water and everything else would be ok. The guy behind me never passed me. He was definitely catching me though. It was a good swim though. I went out too fast though and had to slow it down to get into the right stride and form. Felt tired when I got out but felt good.

Course: It was an out and back 12 mile course. I took the first half pretty easy and averaged about 20mph. I didn't really know where I was going and was following the guy in front of me. At the turn around point, I was in fourth place. I decided to really hammer the way back. I got out of the saddle and started to hammer it when a cramp hit my right calf. I had to take my foot out of the straps and stretch the calf on the bike. The guy that was right in front of me got a huge jump on me. Plus, another guy passed me while I was stretching the calf. I was able to work the cramp out and put my foot back in and put the bike in a low gear and work on an easy cadence. The calf went back to normal and I was able to hit it hard from that point on. It took me about 3 miles but I caught one of the guys. I was averaging about 22-33 mph on the bike at that point. I wasn't able to catch the 3rd place guy before the transition but I could at least see him. Came into the transition area feeling really good.
