Subject: 10 mile race one week before marathon
I am signed up for both the Army Ten Miler (10/24) and the Marine Corps Marathon (10/31), so they are one week apart. My training plan (Pfitz 18/55) calls for a 10 mile run a week before the marathon, so that works out well.

My question is -- am I going to hurt my chances of doing well in the marathon if I race the 10 miler hard? I'd ideally like to PR in the 10 miler (current PR is 1:28) and run a 4:15 marathon (current PR is 4:33). I think I could easily PR the 10 miler since the Pfitz plan has been so awesome, but I don't want to do it at the expense of the marathon. I've always had at least two weeks between a marathon and other races.

I recover from races and hard efforts fairly quickly (at least for my age).  NO WAY could I PR a 10 mile run and then perform up to my potential in a marathon a week later.  No way.  Just my 2c.

My vote is: yes, you will hurt your chances of running your best marathon.

Some people recover really easily, but I wouldn't chance it. There is a big difference between a 10 mile training run and a 10 mile race. If MCM is your A race - focus on that !

BTW, how do you like Pfitz's 18/55? I'm planning to use it to BQ (need to go 3:40) next year!

IMO that is a terrible idea as I seriously doubt that the 10 miler one week out is designed to be an all out race effort.  Follow the plan, run the 10 mile as a training run (I wouldn't even toe the line personally) and race the marathon.

I LOVE it. It's definitely not easy, but I used Higdon's Intermediate plan for my first two marathons and I feel much, much more prepared this go round. One of my girlfriends BQ'd this spring using the plan, and her previous best was around 4 hours.

I backed away from a half before my full because I knew I would push myself hard which would then affect my marathon performance!  And its true: a 10 mile run is alot different than a 10 mile race...Would you be able to just "run" the 10miler??

No. Definitely a bad idea.
Do a 10 mile training run, then do the marathon.

Yep, pick your poison, but you can't have both.

Thank you all very much. The original thought was to use the Army Ten Miler as just a training run (I've run it several years in a row and just really love the race, all of my friends are running it, etc.). I know I have a few slower friends who are running it -- maybe I'll volunteer to run with one of them to hold my pace back.

If they were races I really wanted to do, I would do it. However, I run more than you and I recover very quickly. I ran my 10 mile PR earlier this year and ran another 4+ miles later in the day. The race was on a Sunday and 6 days later on Saturday I ran a PR in a 5K. Both races were done as part of a 70+ mile week. Granted a 5K is not a marathon, but I think I could have raced a marathon if I wanted to. At that point I had been running 70+ miles/week for about 5 months with a high topping out at just over 100. A couple weeks before the 10 mile PR I had run a PR in a 20K.

How quickly do you recover from a hard effort? Is pushing for the PR in the 10 miler worth jeopardizing all the work you've done for the marathon? That would be my main concern.

I generally recover pretty easily -- usually sore the day after a race, but back to the routine the day after. But since I've never raced two hard efforts that close together, it's hard to tell how long it takes me to return to top form.

It's definitely not worth jeopardizing the marathon. Thanks to everyone again for the reality check -- I just felt like I was wussing out or not pushing hard enough by not trying to PR both. I feel much better about it now.

Many many folks around here use Army 10 as the last training run.  read, TRAINING run.   Its kind of a tradition among the MCRRC runners.

In previous years, though, the Army 10 Miler was three weeks before the MCM, not just one week as it is this year.

Yay! As a slow runner, your support and help with pacing would be very much appreciated by your slower-runner friends. You might help them PR and you get your training run in
