I hear you loud and clear everyone I train with is about 20 years younger or more and 50 lbs lighter. Don't know how they stay on that bike in a good wind.

Last year was my firm HIM event and this coming August I am signed up for Iron Man Canada.  Have to say its a bit scary but after doing the HIM this summer I know I have to focus on two things getting my weight down about 15lbs would really help on the run which I know will be my challange.

The swim and bike I can power through with good form and keeping to my game plan, but I know I was tired at the end of the 1/2 marathon this past summer so I am really run focused this fall trying to work on strenth and endurance as it comes to running.

The nutrician requirements for us bigger guys is also going to be challanging, I will literally go through gallons of fluids in a 14 +or - Hr event.  My goal is simple, to finish, to smile and be greatful that I got to the start line.

I am a real believer in that if I do the program I will be successful. For Me the mental game is going to be hudge.

I really like the comments about what went wrong and particularly take note of the core strength was not what it should have been to support the run. We hear it all the time about doing core and if there is one thing the comments re enforce is to do the core.  I think this is especially true as we become more seasoned (polite for older).

I know I am dedicating at least 3 works out in the gym a week to focus on core.

Yeah, but I don't know how I can stop my bike on a downhill, or keep my 6'4" body from being a mainsail.

jasonball - 2010-09-29 6:49 PM I am new to all this. and just reading this thread alone is very motivating. is there any specific trainning plan that everyone uses.

Check out the "Programs" section of this website, there are free plans available for various distances.  They are good starting points that can be customized/fine tuned.

My first 3 years of triathlon are:

2008- 1 sprint

2009- 2 sprints

2010- 2 Olympic Distances, 1 sprint

2011- will be doing my first HIM! Maybe Syracuse or Poconos-  Not sure what else.

I personally followed the HIM and IM plans here on BT and they set me up quite well to finish both distances.  These distances take a LOT of training though. You need to make sure your family are supportive and that you can commit to your training with vigor.  Good luck on this though, the personal reward makes it all worth it.

I'd really like to do my first iron race in 2011. Three consecutive years now I've been registered for IM, gotten halfway through training, and then had to quit for one reason or another.

I'm training for a half right now (not my first), which I also may not be able to do ... but in any case, I'll pick up the training whenever I can, as I see it being "on my way" to the full distance.

I haven't been in BT much lately and just saw this thread. I recently registered for the Boulder HIM, which will be the longest tri I have done. My weakness is swimming, so I have already started taking lessons. I am also adding more core exercises to my routine. I am hoping to be right at 200 on race day, 37 lbs lighter.

I just registered for Rev3 HIM in Sandusky, OH.  I am so excited!  I did choose to sign up for age group.  I'm 163 right now and don't know if I will qualify for Athena after 10 months of focused training.

I am doing the FL 70.3 in May.  I have started my training and I plan on just loosing while I train.  Just ran my first 13.1 and now I am ready to get this 70.3 out of the way.

Blah!  I had a great thing going in training during October and well into November but then Thanksgiving and hunting season started and it's thrown a wrench into things.  I really need to get focused again.  I am going to struggle through this week (getting up a 3 AM Friday and Saturday for hunting) but starting next Monday I need to get back on target.  I know that May seems like a long way off but I want to be better / faster in 2011.  It's amazing what a couple weeks can do in terms of guilt.

2011 will be a couple of firsts for me.  Running the Shamrock in March.  That will be my first full marathon.  And I am doing the Washington Half Distance in Washington Park, NC in October.  Hopefully 2011 is a good year for all of us!!!
