Subject: After Running - Muscles in my Feet Hurt

I am training for my first 1/2 mary and am hitting my long weeks right now.  My legs are recovering fine after my long runs but the muscles in my feet are really sore.  Wondering if anyone had any advice (I've been trying to stretch my arches, toes) on why this might be happening or what I can do to alleviate this.

Thanks

The TP Therapy ball (in the "foam" roller set) is good for rolling under your feet.  Golf ball could have the same effect- loosens stuff up.

I switched shoes to ones with better mid-support and my feet were a little better.  Also working your arch with a tennis ball on the ground or something similar is helpful (I push down with one foot on top of the other for extra effect).

I don't think the muscles in your feet should hurt, regardless of how much/little you run.  I think it may be a problem with your shoes - how do they fit?  Are your heels slipping?  Room in the toe box is good, room everywhere else isn't.

I use a trigger point foot wheel.. be careful though or you will bruise the heck out of your foot if you go too hard the first few times you use it and try to completely get the knots out.  It will take a week or so to get used to it.

listen to your body.  Before you run more, I'd suggest a slight rest.  And I'd suggest that when you start running more (bit by bit by bit week after week after week), you slow down at first.

X whatever on what everyone else said about using therapy balls, trigger point, getting used to running more and possibly buying different shoes. I also will freeze a water bottle and roll my feet back and forth over it while sitting at my desk. I hope this helps.

Have a great day,
Darrell

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it is probably not the muscles in your feet but tendons which means they could be inflamed which means something is up.  I personally would rest, check shoes, ice, etc., but then again, I find when folks ask other folks on the internet for advice, they aren't looking to stop.  (this from personal experience.) LOL

My feet get "sore" too after long runs if I'm not proactive.  Immediately after runs and nightly I roll with a tennis ball and work my way up to a Baseball.  I stretch my feet and the legs, the calf muscles/tendons have foot relationships going on.  Also cool water soak (50-60/65F) your feet to help with any inflammation.  Massage (self, other) is a must too.  That was a good link posted above.

x whatever on checking shoes and some recovery.  And I'm going to add that the Foot Rubz ball is da bomb.  It's like a nubby golf ball.

There's some truth in the suggestion that running more will help... I used to get sore feet from running all the time, but since I have gradually ramped up my running volume with LOTS of slow easy miles, my feet almost never hurt anymore. YMMV, but I also made the switch to more minimalist running shoes (kind of like racing flats - very little heel build up, not a lot of cushioning, no motion control). My feet also seem much happier since I switched to running in "less" shoe. It might be something to consider trying, but we're all different, and it might not be the right type of shoe for you...

How many miles do you have on your shoes?  I had the same problem when I started breaking into the 10+ mile runs, replaced my shoes and it mostly went away.
This might also sound wierd, but when I feel things tensing up in my foot while running, I literally say to my self "relax" and attempt to try to relax my foot....It seems to be working thus far.  We will see this weekend at my first HM.

Good luck with getting rid of the foot pain.
