Just curious to see if anyone has read this book. Just recently got a Quarq Cinqo PM and loving it! Now to actually use it for training instead of staring at the numbers (although it is fun to go up a hill spinning versus hammering and see the difference in power :@).

It looks like it uniformly has received rave reviews and the book is relatively inexpensive. I am leaning on getting it, but was curious to see what people's experience is with this book. Thanks!

It's a pretty good book for people just getting into power.  But not essential.  It does a good job of explaining the basics and the terminology.  There are also some decent workouts they provide.

book is good.  read it several times.

if you gotten a pm its time to run some tests and get some proper workouts.  check out jorge's cycling workouts so you can get some ideas.  problem with the workouts in the book, they are based on specific FTP...not that you couldn't convert it, but why bother.

personally i like jorge's plan because as your FTP increases and you can keep doing those workouts over and over and over.  and he has alot of variety.

I really like the book, I even liked it enough to buy the second edition. I found the 2nd one with much more info on how to use WKO with triathletes

I personally found this book more helpful:

I also have the book you mention. Training with power = good

Both books are good - Skiba manages to explain the subject in a third the number of pages.  The detail in the Allen and Coggan is intense.  Some of the more technical sections were not fully understood until I became involved in Jorges Winter cycle training with power program.  This topic requires some seat time before the complexity of the subject is understood.

I have both books and a Powertap and I still feel somewhat lost, even after reading them. I am following Jorge's plan which thankfully is at least putting my powertap to good use! I have WKO+ too. I just need help interpreting all of the data and exactly how all of the features on WKO work. I need a webinar or something! That, or time to read the books completely, at full attention, with no distractions. Happy reading!
PS- advice- don't read either book in bed before you go to sleep. Maybe that was part of my problem too.

I've probably read Allen and Coggan's book 10 times over last few years and Skiba's book quite a few times over last two years. I think Skiba's books (get both) explain things better but terminology is a bit confusing since he uses Race Day terms vs. WKO+ terminology that Allen/Coggan book uses.

Probably using both is helpful if you are using wko+.

It took me a few times reading it to finally get the hang of power. Training with power and using wko+ since '06, I've learned a lot just using it. Early on I often would be looking at the book and my power files to try and understand things.

If you get Skiba's book I'd recommend getting both his books as the training and racing with power makes more sense if you have read his first book.
