I know I need to train with whatever I'm going to use race day. Is it easier to use what is being used on the course or to plan on brining my own?

Also, supplements are expensive--how much do I really need some of these higher calorie supplements and recovery supplements. AND, what is out there?

It is easier to live off the course, but more important that you fuel with something that works for you.  I prefer Gu so I carry that and then pick up more at special needs.  In the grand scheme, really not a big deal.  Supplements are 100% unnecessary.  Nothing wrong with a glass of chocolate milk or a smoothie after a work out.  Having said that, I do use some of those products, but only because I am willing to pay for the slight advantage they might be giving me.

It all depends what you find easier.  It's worth at least trying out what they use on the course during practice a couple times just to make sure you don't develop GI issues or hate the flavor that would prevent you from taking that in during a race.  If it works okay for you, then just use that.  If it doesn't work for you, you can always bring your own, which requires more planning and preparation on your part.

I don't use high calorie supplements or recovery supplements much, but I do use Gu's and a couple energy bars when I race.  When I'm training, I usually just prefer food, but will use energy drinks (e.g. gatorade).

I don't do well with sugary stuff so I stay away from Gu's, gels and full strength electrolite drinks.  I pretty much train and race with granola bars and PBJ sandwiches plus half strenght Ironman endurance drink.   It worked for me very well for IMAZ
I think you need to find what works well for you and stick to it.  whichever route you go,  you still need to train and get the frequency routine perfected before race day.  I think the frequency is the most inportant part of the equation becasue weather may throw you off from your routine.

Good luck

I just use lunch for my recovery supplament.  I use inifinit on the bike and gu on the run.  I mostly cary my own stuff.  If they had GU at the IM I would be all set.  I need to check that out for this year.  I get all the electrolytes I need from the infinit and gu.

I'm training with the IM Perform drink they will have on the course as my coach said you should bring your own otherwise, and I'm traveling to WI from CO and want to make it as simple as possible.  I do tend to have stomach issues with things I'm not used to, so I'm glad I actually like the stuff.  2 triathlon coaches and my nutritionist suggest 8 oz. of chocolate milk within a half hour of any workout over an hour (99 cents each) and have given me lots of articles to back that up, so I don't buy the expensive recovery drinks anymore, unless I forget my milk or it gets warm.  My gym charges $5.00 for Muscle Milk Light, though, so I try not to let that happen too often

MrSolis - 2011-02-02 1:19 PM  I pretty much train and race with granola bars and PBJ sandwiches

How many PBJs did you eat at IMAZ?  Just wondering as I'm looking to add some solid foods to my mix.  Someone told me 1/2 a PBJ each 60-75 minutes on the bike.  That would add up to about two sandwiches.

I got some infinite that I really like so far for the bike. I plan on using GU as my gels, cliff shot blocks and will prob incorporate PB and jelly and bananas once my training gets super long. I also will use GU brew on the run.

I will probably bring my own stuff--while one of my races IS serving GU, it seems like a lot of the time they are the off flavors and sometimes it's just too much for me.

I will say, however, I tend to have an 'iron stomach' and have never really had an issue with anything.

its certainly easier to live off the course if you like what they are serving.  I do a mixture of both.  I do'n t  buy recovery stuff either.  I use PBJ before and after, or a turkey on WW sandwich or a yogurt drink afterwards.  I like real food.  Last couple IMs I had an uncrustable in my T1 and T2 bags and ate about 1/2 of each one as I made my way out of transition.  I like real food and I have an iron stomach.  I use twizzlers cut in 1/2 on the bike.  Also mini payday bars.  I usually bring my own drink because I'm not a fan of gatorade.....
