Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:50 local time (3:50 central time). Ouch. Ate a Gen-Soy bar, banana. Drank an ensure and two cups of coffee. Drank a bottle of fruit juice containing race day boost.
Event warmup:

Was unable to bike due to transition logistics. I don't run before a half-ironman. Swam 15 minutes including some backstroke and a few sprints Immediately prior to start.
Drank a bottle of water with liquid endurance 90 minutes prior to my wave
Took a gel with a cup of water 20 minutes prior to my wave.
Swim
  • 31m 16s
  • 1980 meters
  • 01m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

Due to start logistics I had a hard time getting up to the fast swimmers and drafting. Drafting became impossible when we swam through the two waves ahead of us.
What would you do differently?:

With a pier dive start, nothing
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Bike
  • 2h 27m 48s
  • 56 miles
  • 22.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Had trouble getting in a groove. I really like the course. My bike fit on the time trial bike needs adjustment. I had trouble keeping a good pedal stroke. Adjustments will be made. My bike placement is unacceptable for me, but I know how to fix it. It will be fixed
What would you do differently?:

Bike fit needs tweaking
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Run
  • 1h 33m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Took it too easy for first half of course. Let the 3rd place guy pace me and was counting on pacing right and him blowing up. Well that never happened.
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little closer to redline
Post race
Warm down:

Drank two bottles of gatorade and stretched for 10 minutes. Ate a personal pan pizza and packed up to leave. Not preferred recovery routine, but I am taking the week off to relax so no need to bounce back immediately for training. Had to haul home to prepare my wife's suprise birthday party and prepare for the inlaws arrival from out of town.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike fit and pushing a little beyond comfort level. I know what needs to be done bike-wise.

Event comments:

Very good race organization. Fun swim. Very nice bike course.

Great race dude.  You have to be pleased with that result.  Way to rock the field.  That would be a dream race in my books.  You definetey have the fittness and determination to carry you through.  What was wrong with the bike, I'm curious, whats your ride.
