Subject: Big guys+light shoe=Knee Pain?
Hi all,

Earlier this year I switched to a light weight running shoe, the K-Swiss Kona. I came off of a pair of heavier Pearl Izumi (more support). Since I switched, my knees have been bothering me (left knee especially).

Question: Will my knees/legs eventually build into working with the new shoes, or should I go back to the bigger/cushier ones.

FYI: Age 37, Height: 6'1", Weight: 191(ish) pounds. My run volume is ramping up in training for IMLP in July. Also, the knee pain isn't very painful, but concerning since I've never had it before. Really concerned.

As always, thanks in advance for the great advice.

Why did you switch?  How long have you been running in the new shoe?  Did you switch and ramp up the mileage at the same time?

In addition to the questions above did you get fitted for the K-swiss?  Support and cushion are 2 different things and the wrong support in either a cushier or less cushy shoe could lead to pain.

Could be it has less control so your foot is moving more and twisting the knee and such. At your height and weight and age why change something that works? you need all the protection you can get we are not getting any younger stick with what works and leave the uber light to the 110 lbs racers! Good points. I loved the feel of the lighter shoe. I also love the drainage on wet days. I never had them fitted. i just bought the size I usually get and started running.

But you're right, light shoes are probably not for me. Time to re-order some Pearl izumis. They fit like a glove.

Thanks. I'm a mid-foot runner (I think). I started off with 30-min runs in the new sneakers, several times per week. 3 months later I'm up to 80-min runs. The pain started maybe 2 months ago. The shoes are the only thing I changed over the last few years.
