Not to snag a thread from ST....but let's face it, Lance threads are always a hoot! So Lance swam an OWS race last week and finished third OA in 49min. This coming on the heels of a report from a buddy of mine who swam at a pool in Colorado next to Lance. Now my friend is a 53min IM swimmer, so he's fatser then most of us here, and he said Lance was pulling away from him in the next lane. SoI need to eat some crow as I have been very skeptical that he could get a really competitive swim split for a potential IM race this year. I was thinking he would be lucky to go 58 but now.......

That's extremely impressive!

But, he still needs to tie in the other two disciplines in succession and be clean in Tx (x = 1 and 2), too.

Obviously no idea what his effort level was, but I'd say (talking totally out of my azz) 49 standalone is a 52-53 IM swim?   Still fast.

Yep, probably have to add a few minutes if he's planning to bike & swim afterwards.  But still, he should be less "in the hole" coming out of the water than most people expected which makes things much more interesting.  I'm not wholly surprised given his swim background, but still impressed he was able to get back to that level so quickly.  Not sure when he plans to race a tri, but it should be entertaining!

I followed this thread on ST with great interest.

Wetsuit-assisted, but sounds like a legit, timed-race result.

If he can throw down a 50-55min IM swim, he's going to be a serious threat to most of the pros in IM, immediately. I had expected his swim to be a big weak spot, but it's looking like a minimal weakness that can be easily accomodated by his bike speed.

All he has to do now is to get some serious run training in (he's only trained casually even while running a 2:40 marathon) and he's going to be a force. I doubt he'll be top-10 Kona, or even top-20, but he'll be mixing up with some strong pros and a legitimate contender for a non-Kona win for sure if he keeps it up.

Exciting stuff.

I was wondering how long it was going to be before it got mentioned here. ST has had a field day with it, I'm sure this will be a civil thread. The crowd that LA hangs with in Austin are swimmers with serious ability. Olympians some of them(Peirsol) if(he does) he can hang with them in workouts then his swim time is not surprising to me. That ingrained muscle memory from years ago has returned very quickly. So I hope we get to see it happen at a race soon, he'll do fine.

Man what a microscope he is under.

Thats pretty impressive, I wonder how his whole race will tie together though. Of course he wont pace that during the race, but its still interesting.

So on an unrelated question, can anyone tell me when Lance is racing his IM? Is he just jumping straight in to Kona?  This year?

He is now, I believe training with Alberto Salazar.

I think you'd have to ask LA himself if you want to know his plans.  Otherwise it's all speculation.

Apparently he would still have to qualify, but as far as racing as a pro goes, from what I've heard all he needs to do is maintain his cycling pro liscence and he'll be qualified to race as a pro in triathlon.

Lance is a serious tease if you ask me. Of course, I suppose it is mostly speculation that drives the teasing.

He is an amazing athlete, and this just goes to show prove to people that he DOES know how to swim.  He started endurance sports in swimming, I don't know how people don't get that....

I'm not a die-hard LA fan, but he has done amazing things in endurance sports, and if he puts his mind to it, he can do great things.  The only thing that the pros will have on him come race day is ironman/Kona experience, and that can not be faked.  Rest assured that he knows that and will train extra hard to give himself as much of a leg up as he can in the fitness dep't.

Don't count him out LA haters, he has a very good chance of doing VERY well.  IMO the only wildcard left is his lack of experience at Iron-distance (not in triathlon, but IRON-distance tri).

I think it would be pretty exciting if he exited T2 which a decent lead and you had the top pros chasing him down. That would make for some good drama. I'm not predicting it, just saying it would be cool.

How much faster than top pros do you think LA is when it comes to the bike? It seems like he would have an advantage but I don't think it would be as much as you all make it out to be.

Im a huge LA fan and excited to see him in triathlon!

I know from a source close to Lance that he plans on racing at Kona this year (and winning it). I am very hesitant to reveal who my source, is so of course everyone is going to be skeptical.

Lance isn't going to show up for an IM if he thought he would embarrass himself.  I would expect him to at least be competitive in his AG if not with the pros.

I'm a Lance fan, but also suspect that this IM buzz could be a bit of a PR counter-move to all the negative publicity over the on-going doping investigation.

Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Mark

Post one: What makes Lance different from Lieto
Response: I can think of 7 things.

Oh DEAR!

Yeah, he's definitely in the running. Let's see what his run time is though.

Well if you take a great triathlon cyclist like Lieto and see how he has the ability to come off the bike with a substantial lead (then blow up on the run), and Lance can pretty much put him away easily, I would expect a pretty big lead. Maybe 15+ minutes?

This of course is just my opinion.  I think he will need 20-30 minute lead to hold off the chasing pack, assuming that they don't push to hard trying to keep up with him on the bike.
