bryancd - 2011-04-07 6:50 PM I would love to see him race Pro, but I don't think that's fair to the Pro's so I would vote AG.

how old are you Bryan? (real question, I don't know) would you be in the same AG? would you think it fair to compete against him?

I think I'd rather see him race pro though. nobody is comparing him to AGer's.

Everybody is talking about how he will burn out of the bike like Lieto, how he can't run like Crowie etc..

Prince of Denmar - 2011-04-07 7:36 PM the article says he might shoot for the Chicago Marathon this year? he shows he can swim, he can sure ride, what if he shows us he can run??

Like a 2:46 stand alone marathon?

I think people are saying something more like under 2:40. 2:46 is good amazing but not even close to some Kona run splits in a race.

Not even close?  Quite a few of the men's winners have been in the 2:50s.  In an IM, I'm not saying Lance will run that fast, but almost no one goes low 2:40s.

5 people ran under 2:47. Not coincidentally, most of them are found at the front of the race. I'm not saying he has to, I was merely responding to the people above myself. Personally I think if he does do it, he has a great shot at winning.

Lance and Chris Lieto raced the Queek K and Lance only finished 15 seconds faster than Chris. Lance said he averaged 56 km/hr (I'm guessing one way) which is almost 35 mph. I think his bike times will be very fast but fast enough to hold off amazing runners? I would like to see if Lance can put enough pressure on the bike that even the best riders burn too much on the bike. I think Lance would have a great shot of finishing top 10 if not top 5 because he knows how to win.

I would like to see him race pro, as long as he follows the same qualifying procedure as the other pros.  And, I think he can contend for the win, but I don't think it is a slam dunk.

I'm 42, so he would be in my AG. And no, I don't think it would be unfair, he's not a professional triathlete and hasn't completed any of USAT requirements to have a pro card let alone start as a pro at the World Championships. Sure WTC could give him some kind of dispensation and give him a pro slot in the race, but I just don't think that's kosher. Let him be an AG'er but strat in the pro wave so he is gooing head to head against the best. If he wins, well, WTC will have an interesting problem to solve!

My point was in response to the Prince's "What if he can run?" question. He has already shown a decent Marathon time. That's all I'm saying.

It was cool to be on the course with him. Here's what I wrote in my RR from that day:

"I think it was somehwere around mile 8 that I came upon the Lance Armstrong peleton! I looked up and he was about 10 feet in front of me, surrounded by his pacers and possee and about 30 other runners who wanted to run along with him. There was a HUGE gap up to the next group of runners up ahead as everyone who caught up to Lance slowed down. It was very funny, excpet for the fact that as I ran behind him for a few miles, I kept thinking either I have no business being this far up in the pack or he is going slower than the 2:40 pace he was anticipating. It turns out both were true. At one point his group was broken up at an aid station and he pulled over to the side and turned to wait for them while running backwards. I passed by about two feet to his left and wished him well. He didn't acknowledge me, but it ws cool to have a chance to say something to him. His group passed me agin a mile or so later and I lost touch."

I ran New York the same year he did and basically had a similar experience.  It did get me wondering what kind of advantage he had with all of these people running with him.  Results wouldn't be materially better, but I did wonder how much faster my time would be if I had someone getting me drinks and handing me gels, not to mention having Alberto Salazar running alongside offering coaching on the fly.

Indeed, that's why pacers aeren't allowed in Ironman.

I have to fully admit, I am a real sucker for triathadrama, so I agree....let him race up with the pros, but keep him as an AGer.  And if rumor holds true that he's not racing this year...I can only say it's because he wants to win or come really close.  Lance won't race without knowing he's prepared to put that kind of time down.

I remember him and Lieto doing a short 14 mile 'twitter TT' in Hawaii.

"With a hearty tail-wind, Armstrong finished in 18:35, while Lieto finished around 18:50 (18:44 according to Lieto's twitter page). Armstrong averaged 56.4 kilometers per hour, which is 35 mph."

Or because he wants to earn points as a pro and enter Kona the following year.

I know this thread has been off for a while and I didn't want to start a whole new one, but an article in the local paper had some interesting info.  They said that they confirmed with Ironman Kona officials that he has not registered as of this week and seems to be having some knee trouble and has not been doing much running.

I honestly would have more respect for him to race as an AG.

He's not a pro triathlete, not using his celebrity status, and he would be amongs the "commoners".

Doesn't mean he still cant kick butt...right?
