Veteran 363 Ft. Myers, Florida | Subject: Do you get enough sleep? This is an ongoing issue for me. I'm often torn between getting up early enough to fit in everything I need to do before work, including my workout (I work nights) and letting the time slide by allowing myself the 8-9 hours of sleep I know my eyeballs, brain and body need. Unfortunatly, when I let myself sleep, I find myself running out of time and not being able to get in my complete workout for the day. I'm betting most people find themselves in this exact predicament all the time. So what do you all do? Push the envelope and short yourself 1-2 hours of sleep in order to get the workout in, and somehow "make up" for lost sleep on the weekend? Or do you allow youself the extra sack time? Also if you're an early riser, shorting yourself sleep time, how much (or if at all) do you find your workouts suffering? |

Extreme Veteran 845 Springfield, OH | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I know I don't get enough, but I can't bring myself to even look at the bedroom before 11:00 PM. I probably end up falling asleep around midnight and wake up around 6:30 most days (and finally crawl out of bed by 7:00, hit the road by 7:30). I usually make up for it with a nap sometime in the late afternoon usually after a hard workout. I also find I fall asleep much faster the harder I train. |

Elite 4235 Spring, TX | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? If I don't wake up early, I won't fit all my workouts in. More importantly, in the summer here in Houston, there's no way to do a good run workout in the evening with the heat/humidity, so mornings are a must. I'm out of bed at 4:30 every morning and in bed by about 8:45. That works itself out to about 7 1/2 hours per night, which isn't enough, but I can get by with it. It's always tempting to sleep in, but when I do, I'm mad the rest of the day about missing the workout or stressed about trying to fit 2 workouts in the evening. I'd rather just get out of bed... |

Regular 164 Connecticut | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I am NOT a morning person (just ask my boss). The more I workout, the better my mornings are, though. I got up early one day to work out b/f work b/c I new it was that or nothing and it sucked. I didn't have the energy. I didn't have the mental pizzazz I usually use to talk myself into going a little bit further or a little bit faster. So - I don't work out in the mornings. I am lucky enough to be able to work out during my lunch breaks. There is a gym right in my building. A previous job I had, there was a gym next door. Really, I do NOT know how I would get it all in if I couldn't work out then. I try to do an evening or two work outs a week, too. I try to get in bed by 10 and my alarm goes off at 6 or 7 depending on the day. So 8 - 9 hours night. I HAVE to have 7 at least to function. Luckily, my 2 yr feels the same way about sleep. Pro 5361 | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I get 'almost' enough sleep. I'm good on 7-1/2 hours. In bed a little after 10, and up about 5:45. That works. I get in my run between 6-7am, out the door by 8am. Of course, there are always those night when I don't get to sleep until 11:30, and need to get up at 5:30. I hate them. |

Veteran 261 Fort Worth, Texas | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I sleep 6hrs no matter what. If I fall asleep at 2pm I sleep 6hrs. 2am 6hrs. I'm 37 and haven't used an alarm clock in 20yrs. Some bodies need more sleep than others. If you need the sleep then sleep. I for one am not going to make myself sleep less than I need for a hobby. I love triathlon, but it is still a hobby. That being said I don't think most people need 8-9hrs of sleep. To me this is like the Gov. food pyramid. We have just heard it all our lives so that is what we think we should do. I am a "Do what works for you" kind of person. Get up early for a month and see how you do. If it doesn't work try something different. |

Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? Yup, I get plenty. I'm in bed by 10:00 and up at 3:00. With alarm, without alarm, weekends, holidays, whatever. I'm glad I started sleeping longer, only 4 hours a night for about 20 years was enough. |

Probably not healthy, but it works for me. |

I occasionally will workout in the evenings but too many interruptions and the focus is on family. In bed usually by 10 and up by 5. Usually up 1-2 times each night with one of my three year olds. My girls take turns waking everyone up. No - I don't get enough sleep. A nap would be fantastic but not sure how I can do it. Until my girls are a bit older and consistently sleeping through the night, it is my reality. |

Master 1993 Riverside, IL | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I definitely do not get enough sleep. I work evenings, so I generally aim to be home by 10pm and in bed no later than 10:15. I get up at 4:30 on weekdays, and currently 5:30 on weekends but that will change to 4:30/5am, as it gets warmer and my weekend bike rides start earlier. Right now my rides start around 6:45, but by mid-June, we will often hit the road by 5:30am for longer rides. I do sneak in an hour nap M-Thur before I head off to work at 3pm. But it's still not enough...I'm always tired and always feel like I'm dragging. On weekday mornings, I'm at the gym by 5:45 and once I do get going, my energy level seems fine....but by the end of my workout, I'm totally drained and exhausted. If I didn't get a nap in before work, I'd be falling asleep at my desk. I seriously think that I look forward to sleeping more than ANYTHING else that I do...a sad, but true statement. |

Elite 3498 Laguna Beach | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I just reviewed an interesting book on recovery, The Athlete's Guide to Recovery By Sage Rountree. She touched on the important role of sleep. You original post title asked if I get enough sleep. No. I usually don't. I find I need a lot of sleep to be optimal, it is easy for me to sleep 14 hours. No kidding. I operate on 5-8 hours during the week but generally "sleep load" on the weekends getting at least 10 hours and, this past Saturday night, 14 hours. There have been times in my life when I've operated on very little- like most people. College, work, the military- all environments where you're going to be sleep deprived. I managed, but more sleep is better. |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I look at sleep as training. I know I cannot perform unless I am well rested. I have a demanding job, somewhat demanding wife (by that I mean she wants us to experience more from life than my tri's and that is a good thing), church, family, children 5, 17, 18, 20, and 23. If I do not rest like I should there is no way I could keep up with the demands of a busy day. Doing well in tri's is very important to me and sleep is a factor to success. It seems odd to me to workout so hard and than short circuit it long term if I do not rest/recover. It is an important aspect that I really try to focus on. If only I could get my diet under control. This is similar to my schedule. I get up at 6:30AM and often find it difficult to get into bed prior to midnight. That combined with working and training (not to mention wife and kids) during the week and I'm burnt to a crisp come Friday evening. I've recently tried to start getting myself into bed more like 11 - 11:30 and the quality of my workouts have recently improved as a result. |

I know sleep issues are complicated and may be frustrating to address but I've met quite a few people who professionals have really helped. |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? Yeah, I sleep 8 hours per night, but more importantly, I sleep the SAME 8 hours per night. I go to bed around 8:20 and I am up at 4:20, not to train but to get to my office, I train in the afternoon when I am off work. I think the key even if you can only manage less hours is make them the SAME hours. That puts your body into a natural version of cicada rhythm, which is very healthy. |

Extreme Veteran 516 Chicago | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? OK, I'm really bad. I start work at 5:30am and it's a PITA getting there, too, so I'm up by 4am. The problem is I can't stand my job and at the end of the day I always seem to think "if I go to sleep now the faster the time will go by for me to have to leave for the God awful place!", so I usually end up sleep somewhere between 11-12pm. Yeah, less than 5hrs every night. On my weekends I can actually get to bed early so I can wake up for the long workouts, I guess since I look forward to them, I don't know. I still only end up getting 6-7hrs, though. Anyhow, I still have the energy I need to s/b/r and my sleep deficit doesn't seem to bother me. But, who knows? Maybe I could be a better triathlete if I did get all the sleep I need! |

Yep, that's the way it is for me too! Except one thing, most days I take a nap when the baby does for about 30 mins. The older kids watch tv. Oh, and I get up consistently at 1230 am to check on the kids and take care of the baby. For me, consistency is the key! Same bedtime, same wake time makes it the easiest. I HATE THE SEASONAL TIME CHANGES. Just felt like throwing that one in there. |

Elite 4583 | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? I happen to have narcolepsy so I get enough sleep whether I want to or not! I control it with meds during the day, however. I typically go to bed around 8-8:15 when my daughters go to bed and get up anywhere from 3:30am-4:00am to get my training in. Because I fall asleep immediately (yes, immediately) I get 7.5-8 hours a night. I feel like I get enough sleep, although sometimes if I'm really tired during the day I don't know if it's my narcolepsy or if I haven't rested adequately. |

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Do you get enough sleep? After one career that was based on sleep deprivation, I find that I want a full night's sleep if I burn enough calories during the day. My job now is cerebral, not physical. But this tri thingy has me working out up to two, three hours a day if I remain healthy. During these times I will sleep between 9 and 11 hours a night. Luckily I have a job that permits this (or else I don't have much of a life). This seem to be contra to the accepted notion that one requires less sleep as one gets older. For the record I am 53.
I embrace sleep now. It's the great restorer and healer. |
