Subject: Lower Back Pain on Bike

I just finihse dmy first HIM two weeks back in Galveston.  Once thing that suprised me during and after the race was the issue with my lower back.   It was killing me during the ride to where I had to spend many miles upright trying to stretch it out.  I am mostly to blame since I was undertrained and did not spent a lot of time on my bike training.  Generally just 2-3 rides a weel at approx 1.5.  I wanted to get some feedback on what I can do eliminate this as I was selected for Kona by the lottery and will begin training next week.  Of course we all know that bike course is grusome!

I assume it has to do with a vareity of things (strength, aero position, time in saddle, etc.)  Your feedback would be great.

Thanks

I've had this issue and for me it was:

1) bike fit - moving into a less aggressive position for longer rides or just generally making sure you're properly fit on the bike.

2) I have very tight hamstrings and lower back and I need to be very diligent about stretching or I'll start to feel it on long rides.

YMMV.

Get a bike fit, ride more and do it outside, follow a plan to get ready for Kona.

Bike fit

I had the same issue with my old roadie bike.  My back was killing me during the ride. You are probably too stretched out.  My new bike is much closer. I havent done a final fit yet but I can already tell its much better. No lower back pain any more.

Thanks for the advice.  This really helps.  I plan to get fit again before I start training in May.  As I said earlier, I am to blame, I of course messed around with my bike position 2-weeks out from the race because I thought I felt better in a "more aero" position.  That was a big NO NO!    I appreciate the feedback.

Bike fit ;-)

That said, I got a bike fit for my TT bike, took it for a spin, tried heading up a steep hill and my back was in agony! Took it back and got a bigger fram and a better fit! So, I'll change 'bike fit' to proper bike fit!

Most probably want to do some strengthening work too, in particular to get your glutes fired up and working properly so your back doesn't have to do so much.

Awesome on getting a lotto place - that's ace. Once in a lifetime thing. Kill it!

Me too... I think all the above contributes to low back pain but for me I think it's my extremely hard stock felt saddle that I can feel the metal bars in the seat. I blame the seat because I get the same low back pain when I sit for prolonged periods on a hard surface such as a church pew or metal chair.... SoMy plan is to try that first than get refit
