Age Group Rank = 25/42
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, had a bagel, drank water, set up transition, freak out. Hung out for a while as my heat was WAY after everyone elses.. out on my wetsuit with about 1/2 hour to go.

I was actually able to see my mom come out of the water before I even started. She did great, but stopped at the end, took of her cap and ducked her head in the water, and casually ran up to the transition.. I love the way sdhe is so relaxed
Event warmup:

Swam about 100m in the warm up. Felt the nerves build, I hate the swim warm up.. I stretched my arms and talked to my brother a bit. He was making all kinds of jokes at the start. I was out of my mind nervous.. but it was ok.
Swim
  • 25m 46s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had a hard swim, I really wanted to draft more than I did, but couldn't get the right persons feet. I was having a hard time sighting, but if I relaxed a bit, I might have been able to see a bit more. At one point some guy was going the wrong way and stearing right into me, but I knew I was going straight for the next mark so I let him swim into me. I think he was a little annoying thinking that he was going the right way and I let him smash into me. Whatever, i thought it was funny. I tried to keep bilaterally breathing as I know I'm faster that way. I was NOT going in a straight line for some of it, it was pretty crazy. I was all over the place.. I was able to draft for about 200 m at the end. I came out of the water and was really surprised to see that I had swum 25 minutes. I was even more surprised to see my that my brother was behind me after the swim. It was his first open water race!
What would you do differently?:

look at the course a bit more carefully before.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

This was so slow, four girls came after me and left before me. I think I need to work on this.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 15s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.54 km/hr
Comments:

I was trying to keep my pace at an average of 32km/hr I was super focused on this and it allowed me to push to bring up my averages. This was the breaking point for my race, I knew that if i did what I wanted to do I would have enough time for the run, so I was really pounding out the flats. It hurt, I was in pain for most of the time. Kept some words in my head like "don't forget to hammer" "big wheels keep on turning" and "today is my day" .. i'm really happy with my time. super super happy. I had a two gells on the bike, one 10 minutes in and one with about 4k to go. I felt my foot get hot at around the third lap mark, I started getting concerned for the run.
What would you do differently?:

not much.. spin more a the end
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Run
  • 54m 13s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 25s  min/km
Comments:

My PB for 10k is about 53 minutes. I'm really happy with this time. I was up to speed and was running well with three girls, then they got up to speed and left me :( it was ok though.. I was having a hard first lap but I was watching my time really closely, I knew I had about 6.3 minutes a k which is a fine pace for me. when I hit the 2k mark, I was cursing, 2K! only.. so I kept going.

I took a gatorade and a water at each stop, water on head gatorade in tummy, this was KEY, I really felt the gatorade. At about 4km I really started to feel my foot. I saw Ginny on this lap too! I came around the Transition with about 28minutes to do the last 5km. Then my foot started to really hurt. I wanted to make it to the 7km mark with more than 15minutes. so I kicked for a bit, I hit that mark with about 17 minutes and threw in another gear to get me home. All I was thinking was being able to call coach and tell him I made my goal. The last 2km, the pain was ripping up my leg, but I could see the finish, and had 12minutes to go, I knew I could do it, but I knew I was in a lot of pain. I hammered out the last 2km. and came in with a minute 15 seconds to spare. I ran up the finish chute saw my ENTIRE family chearing me on. My brother knew I had made my goal and he was yelling, 2:45 BABY! and I was basically crying in happiness and pain. It rocked
What would you do differently?:

umm, run faster?
Post race
Warm down:

stopped to let the person take off my chip, took a step, someone looked at me and pointed me towards the medical tent. someone took off my shoe and iced it down, the medical guy looked at my shoes and said, you need shoes and insoles. i said "ok"

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the heat.

Event comments:

If you ever have the chance to to this race DO IT!

Yeah OWS at Kits Beach. It's more fun than Sasamat. There should be no problem on finding a pub either. I'll buy you a Strongbow to congratulate you on your awesome race.

Are the results at Race Headquarters? I've got to look up Matthew and and Mark's times. If Matthew got 9th place or better he will make it on the Canadian Junior National team.

Super duper, Laura!!

Your time rocks.  Way to tough it out through the pain during the run...  Very cool that the whole family was tri'ing with you.  That sounds like a great family affair!  Congrats on your time and your toughness.
