Subject: SMP Open water swim

Does anyone attend the open water swim sessions at Shawnee Mission Park? I received my Vortex 4 wetsuit today, and I REALLY need to try it out. lol

Any pointers would be appreciated. Is the atmosphere pretty laid back?

Word on the street is the swim beach does not open up until after memorial day.

It's a laid back affair.  They have times dedicated to open water swim people and you just show up and swim where you want.  It's not really sessons or anything structured.

I've swam in the gym pool on occasion with my suit and as long as you wash off the pool water immediately, it's not a huge problem.

I'm looking forward to the swim times as well. I biked by and I think that sounds right - opens after Memorial Day. I live so close, it'll be awesome to have such a convenient location to swim.

Just got my very first wetsuit last week (DeSoto T1, 2-Piece).  Was just at the park this morning, ran a 5K, drove by the lake wishing I could have jumped in today.   I'm planning on doing at least one of those swims before the race, maybe I'll see some of you there.

I got mine Friday. And had it in the pool Friday afternoon..lol. I can see why everyone wants a westsuit legal swim. It's like being a real swimmer wearing that thing. I lasted about 100 yds before I came to the conclusion that I was getting warm, really warm. I can't wait to really try it out. 

I'm going to volunteer at Heritage Park next weekend and I am hoping to maybe get in the water after all is sad and done.
