Subject: Skewer Question
This may be a ridiculous question but I figured this is the best place to ask. Are skewers interchangeable? I have a set of Hed3's that did not come with skewers, am I safe to use my Neuvation skewers on the Hed's?

Yes they're interchangeable.  There are different types (i.e. trainer specific), but just as long as you don't get the front and back skewers confused, you should be okay!

I thought so. I do have a set of trainer specific skewers, but I know not to use those on the road. However I did not know there was a difference between front and rear skewers.

What's wrong with using the skewer from your trainer on the road?

Nothing. You can use any skewer that fits on the the trainer. And they work fine on the road. I have a trainer-compatible on my rear wheels on both my road and tri bikes and zipp skewers just on my race wheels.

Most skewers are interchangeable from wheel to wheel so long as they're the proper length (using quick releases you're less likely to encounter different diameter axles than on solid axle hubs). Fortunately as long as your dealing with roadbike friendly gear (i.e. not track and not mountain) you're likely to be fine. The current common hub spacing for such gear is 100mm for the front hub and 130mm for the rear. There have been others over the years. So long as there are enough threads on the skewer there is often some backward compatibility. Other hub sizes include:

91 mmLow-end front hubs.
96 mmOlder front hubs, especially French.
100 mmModern front hubs.
110 mmRear older track, coaster brake and other single-speed hubs. Also, front hubs for Downhill bikes with 20 mm axles.
114 mmRear 3-4-speed .
120 mmRear 5-speed, Ultra 6, newer track hubs.
126 mmRear 6- and 7-speed (road).
130 mmRear 7-speed (MTB) and 8- 9- and 10-speed (road).
135 mmRear 7- 8- and 9-speed (MTB)
140 mmRear tandem.
145 mmRear tandem (newer models.)
150 mmRetro-Choppers, some Downhill and Freeride models.
160 mmRear tandem (new Santana proposed standard.)
