Subject: Getting gear to the transition area

So...this weekend is my first tri and I can't wait!  I've got a question about packing your gear to and from the transition area.  I'm trying not to take my truck to the race just due to parking...so now I just elimated my storage pit! I'm thinking of packing up my gear in SMALL duffle bag...but would it OK to leave the bag in the transition area or is there typically an area to put bags in?

Put it all in your bucket. Hang your bucket on the handlebars and ride to the race

Actually, a small backpack or duffel is fine. I put my stuff in a small backpack, unload it in my area, and then if possible take the bag back to the car. When it's not possible, I put my bag on the outside of the fencing around the transition area. Generally, it's pretty safe.

Most races I've been too won't allow for gear bags to be in the transition area. I have an old backpack that I fill up and ride my bike to the transition area. Setup my stuff and put the pack on the other side of the fence. At my last race last year they had a bag check.

I used a duffle bag for my first tri earlier this year. Worked out great. I actually kept the bag in my transition area. After setting up my bike gear and running shoes I left the open bag on top of it all. When I got into T1 and removed my wetsuit I threw it in the bag. When I came back for T2 I threw my bike shoes and helmet in the bag. Not too time consuming, but I was going for just finishing and didn't worry about my transition time. At the end I just picked up the bag and grabbed my bike. Overall a clean transition area and my gear never got in the way of others.

I will usually drive to the race and park, pump tires at the car if needed, load up bike and old backpack with gear, and ride bike to transition area.  I have always kept my backpack in transition and never had a problem taking up too much space and have never been asked to move it outside the fence area.  Just be careful setting up your transition area so it is organized for your race and mindful of your fellow racers.

I have always used a "transition" bag/backpack. When emptied, it serves well as a base for all my ground stuff - shoes, visor, towel. And it's a good place to put Power Bar wrappers and empty gel packs.

All my gear (even a dry shirt for post race) is in my transition bag (back pack works just as well).  I set everything out on a small towel, fold the bag flat and store it under my back wheel.

For the Chicago Tri I was staying within two mile of T1 and just rode my bike to the race.

I lay out all my stuff then give my bag to my beautiful sherpa. Sometimes we are parked close enough for the bag to go to the car, sometimes not. Either way, my wonderfully supportive wife takes care of it for me.

If it's a relaxed triathlon with ample room in the transition area, you can leave it there next to your bike.  But if it's a little more crowded in there, you will want it moved out of the way.  I often do this, and find a place just outside of transition to tuck it away where no one will be bothered by it.  Either just outside the fence, or under a table somewhere.

Since you need a warmup anyway, and you will be setting up transition about 1 hr before race start (Right??!?!?) you have ample time to jog back to your car with your empty backpack if all else fails.

Have fun this weekend!!!!

Most races I have been to have enough space to put your bag (and pump if needed) up next to the fences, out of the way.  One that I attended (that didn't have a care close enough to go back to) didn't allow bags or pumps to be left near the fences.  You may need to double check with the RD.
