I have always worn bulky shoes but recently started running a bit barefoot and just got myself a pair of NB Minimus trail which I love. They just feel so fast. They are so much lighter than my normal trainers.

Anyways, I was thinking today how many people use lighter shoes or flats when racing or training. My norm has been to train and race in the same model of shoe but I race in a pair that has less mileage on them.

Run in a trainer most of the time (Wave Riders at the moment)

Race in a race shoe (Zoot Speed's for shorter tri's and Adidas Adios for Standalone running races and longer tri's)

I currently train in Succony Hurricanes or Asics Kayano's.  Last year I raced in these as well.  Just bought a set of Zoot Ultra Tempo 4's for racing this year and tried them during training runs a few times.  First race is this weekend.  Hoping this will help with my T2 time and plan to go sockless.

Personally I like the psychological effect of having specific race shoes.

In my mind, if I'm wearing my "race shoes" then it's time to hurt.

I train and race in the same model, but rotate 2 or 3 pairs at a time (Mizuno Wave Riders).

Zoot Ultra Race 2. They are my under-10km shoe.

I picked them up for $27 at a store closeout.

I train and race in racing flats, Saucony Grid Type A4.  I have been trying out the Kinvaras, but even those are almost considered racing shoes by most.

Train in Mizuno Wave Riders; will be racing in Zoot Ultras in upcoming Oly.  I take the racing shoes out for periodic runs before the race just to make sure there are no issues.

I do most of my training runs in Vibrams.   The LSDs, anyway.     Race in trainers, or flats according to what distance the race is.

I started off training and racing in standard trainers.  I then bought a pair of flats for racing.  I then started doing some of my training in them.  Now I do all of my training (and racing) in flats or something close (Kinvaras recently, which are comfy and just about like flats).

I've had a pair of the Pearl Izumi's for about a month now and really like them. They are very light, very comfortable without socks, and have a great lacing system. For me, I'll train and race in them up to about 6 miles though. They do not have a great deal of cushioning. I am a bit more sensitive to this than most because of my age and injuries.

I do all my road training and races in Brooks Green Silence which are pretty close to a racing flat. Every time I hit the trail in my Cascadias the first few miles feel like I have bricks attached to my feet.

I train in a heavier, less expensive pair of Staters, so i can replace them cheaper when they wear out. I race in Wave Riders. There is something about putting them on, the race shoes, they are so light and airy compared to my others, I get this greast feeling of being so much faster. Helps put me in the right mind set for a good race.

I train in Asics 2150's and race in Nike Free's.  Both shoes are due for a swap out and since both are phased out models I'll be looking for new shoes.

I train mostly in Nike Pegasus, but use other trainers as well. I race in Adidas Adizero Pro or Adizero Rocket.
