Just hanging out here in Monroe at my sister-in-law's, switching between Fox, TWC, today show and CNN.

Just found out that Jeff Parish water is not drinkable anymore, so it's off to Walmart today to stock up on BeanieWeenies, Ravilois and bottled water.  Have no idea how the house is doing, just because all the reporters are downtown or out of town. We live about 5 miles from downtown, about a mile from the lake off Transcontinental in Metairie.  I'm pretty worried about the enormous oak tree in our backyard.  I'm sure the wind has flung many branches onto our roof.  Just hope it'll still be standing when we get home (whenever that may be).

Just heard there are people on their roof in St. Bernard.  We live about 15 miles west of that, but we have plenty of close friends that have houses out there, so this is really discouraging.

Keep us all in your prayers, guys, and let me know if any of you locals here anything about Metairie or of your homes and families.

from what I hear from my folks on the MS coast, not good. BIL's firestation got destroyed and they had to haul ass out of there. That is a block from where my mother and grandmother live (seperate homes a block away each). So of course, that has us worried since they are in Jackson riding it out with my sister. Of course, right now Jackson's getting pummelled. Plus my Uncle's house is probably destroyed if the news reports are right "total devastation' they live abotu just under a mile from the beach, just outside the south border of the AF Base there. oh, boy..........

I have family from New Orleans staying with us here in Dallas.  One of the husbands stayed behind in New Orleans. We've talked to him several times via cell phone (amazing it's still working).  He was recueing people on Canal Blvd in his boat.  The Lake Front has 8 feet of water in the service alleys and streets.  It appears the 17th Street Canal levee was breeched and Lake Front flooded.

Say a prayer for these people.

My mom lives in Biloxi, in an apartment across the street from the beach. My brother, sister-in-law and their son are in Gautier, about 2 miles north of I-10, but right on Swift Bayou. They all bugged out yesterday to Atlanta (except my brother, who's in the Navy, on a ship docked in Norfolk), so they're all safe. But I really fear the worse for their property. Joe (my bro) is headed to Mayport, and then home if the damage is confirmed. Just keeping my fingers crossed, but fearing the worst. It looks horrible. Our house flooded in Houston, during Allison, but that was nothing compared to what they are going to probably find when they are able to get home. This really puts things in perspective.

I'm praying for everyone affected...

9 pm and all is calm here in Lower Alabama. Watching the news is very disheartening. I can't imagine our house is not flooded or worse. Haley, did you here from your mom??? Brandy/Rob/Joann/Lane let us know you are safe.

We are lucky, we are safe, family in gulf shores has no damage.

Yeah, every time I call my folks, I can hear everyone in the background laughing and carrying on.  It's a shame it takes something like this for my family to get together.

I'm a bit disheartened that I can't get any news about Slidell, LA, anywhere it seems.  All the coverage is about NOLA or Biloxi (understandably).  I fear that Slidell took a worse hit than NOLA.  My folks are in Baton Rouge, and have been told by the Hwy Patrol that they won't be allowed back until tomorrow at the earliest, and maybe not even then.

I was trying to get info on Biloxi, till I remembered to check the local paper's website.  Did you try that?  The local tv station was damaged so it's not as updated as the paper is.   Slidell is closer to Biloxi than NO is, so it's possible.....

My dad is going nuts.  really.  he just wants to get back to his house.

just found out my sis who lives in Woolmarket ( a stone's throw NW from Biloxi, right off I-10) lost her house. They suspect it was a tornado. A neighbor who evacuated not too far away and was able to make it back came back to no home, and called her. She is still in Jackson at my other sister's house. I'm assuming the whole block is leveled. My BIL has been so busy in search/rescue/recovery he hasn't even been by the house yet. I can't sleep. tom is konked out on Percocet, kids are in bed. I'm having a breakdown now. I can't imagine.....

Oh my God.  Thank God they evacuated, right?  I cannot even imagine losing a house.  That's beyond my ability to comprehend.  It's a house, full of memories and the important things of life.  But, I suppose it's STUFF and you can always get more stuff, but you can't remake a life.  Still, I can't imagine.

We lost everything we own in hurricane Opal. I don't talk about it much because it still hurts so badly after all these years. Everything except some clothes and a bed. We were planning a move and had our stuff in storage. Before the storm we took the remaining things because the storage unit was more secure, it flooded with sewage and it all had to be destroyed. We moved home to MI with barely anything. It's awful. I lost my wedding dress, wedding photos etc. I still have my Gene tho and until last year our dog Jesse who came through the storm with us (we had to put her down, she was 12 and had cancer). The important things were us and Jess. It was terrible but we survived. Some folks didn't.

A house and posessions are terrible to lose. It is devastating. They have their lives tho. I know that is cold comfort when all of your memories are in tatters but it's all I have. Your sister will get through this.

You can help by making quality copies of photos and buying her photo frames so she has some pictures. If you know anyone who scrapbooks pay them to put a scrapbook together for the coming holiday season. Pictures are what still hurt the most.

Help her make a plan of attack. That helps me. I am an action girl. I am useless in fixing things in the heat of the moment but I can make a plan that would make a general proud. I am so very, very sorry.

I have not heard from anyone.  I have 4 uncles and my mom and one aunt (who lives on river road, levee is front yard) that I can't get ahold of. Trying not to think about it--I'm sure they're ok (what I'm telling myself).

Christine, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister's home being destroyed. *HUGS*

Damn. Now I know what we would have suffered had Charley roared up Tampa Bay as it was expected to do last year. I'm looking forward to my move to NC all the more; ready to leave this hurricane madness behind me.

Thanks for the invite, but I think I'm pretty safe from the storm here in Atlanta. However, they were prepared, generators, etc. and should be fine without power and water. They're not new to this. I just want piece of mind.

Good morning, all.Lucy and Haley, your families are in my prayers. No word on our house yet. I'm just really upset that no one can make it back to the city. Sounds like it'll be at least a week. that's just not good. First, that means it's so bad, we can't go home. Second, we can't work until we get home. And who's to say I'll be able to work once I get there? Luckily, we'll have some income from hubby, but my salary takes care of most of our bills.Okay...gotta keep it together. We're okay, our families are fine. Lots of people have a hell of a lot less than us right now. Gotta remind myself of that pretty often. Thanks for all the kind words.

Yes, you're very lucky, I guess you just have to think "it could be worse." Try to look at it as thankful you can't get back since the levees are still compromised and you can't get hurt.

Things will be ok.

I am safe!  That is all the good news that I have.  Thanks for the well wishes.  Nothing on my home or my area, but the video that I have seen isn't giving me much hope.  Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes.  I will keep in touch as I can.

My prayers go out to those of you with families in this area.  Best wishes!

Lucy, thanks for the tip about looking at the Sun Herald's site. There's a lot of stuff on there I haven't seen on the national news.

I am trying to take in the magnitude of what happened. No word from Long Beach, I am about to go out of my skin just sitting here unable to do anything and not knowing anything. My parents house is just to the north of the RR tracks in Long Beach, I suspect there's very little left of it based on what's on the news. The eye passed over Picayune, which is where my parents went to get inland. Can't get in contact with them. I have no idea where my grandmother is, or how she is.

Glad to see so many BTers and their families got to safety. Those of you with family that you can't contact yet are in my thoughts.

Stay safe, everybody, in the aftermath of this.
