any takers on how fast this will sell out?

I am VERY interested, but I want to finish my first IM (Placid this July) before I throw my hat into another IM.

This will sell out instantly, IMHO.

Of course, there is always this, http://ironmanuschampionship.com/, that may be a bigger draw for U.S. athletes.  Both 1 weekend apart so there will be competition for triathlete dollars.

I disagree, I think IMNYC will affect it a lot.

Agreed, I think it changes it completely.  For one thing with both races opening up for registration on the same day at the same time, it pretty much guarantees that their servers will be overloaded.  That by itself will prevent selling out instantly.

I'm not so sure. Active.com handles running event entries where 20,000+ people register. I'm thinking that 5,000 people trying to grab 3,000 spots will overwhelm them.

But I agree that there will be a different crowd for both races.

Mt Tremblant looks fantastic.  I am in.

With IMPL and now IMNYC all within a few weeks of each other I think we'll have some time to decide on Mt Tremblant before it fills up.  AND, IMO,  the bucket list crowd will more than likely avoid it once they see the elevations on both the bike and run courses.

Last year Active.com had major problems for IMLP and IMWI registration....LP they let in more people that they wanted and for WI the system went down and they reopened it a few days later. Many people for IMWI were caught part way through registration that didn't know if it went through or not.

I also agree that there will be different crowds for both races.  IM NYC will attract the "bucket list" type.  Because of the current assisted swim and the NYC aspect, it will be attractive to the one and done crowd.  They will not be interested in a scenic race and they will probably not be ready for what the heat will do to them.  And they won't really take into account the logistical nightmare that is IM NYC.  From an international perspective, selling 2,500 spots will take no time at all.

On the other hand, IM Mt Tremblanc will cater to those who are looking for a challenge, a beautiful course, an honest or fair course and have probably done multiple IMs previous.  They will acknowledge how easy this race will be from a logistical perspective.  And with the customer base from US and Canada, selling out this race will not be a problem.

Now the question of can Active.com handle the traffic?  that is a different story all together.

I am very close to committing to Mont Tremblant for my first full IM, but I am a bit scared by the elevations. Training in Austin gives us some decent climbing grades to train on, but nothing sustained. Several miles of climbing we just can't achieve. For anyone familiar with the area, is this an unwise first choice for someone who trains in rolling hills?'

Oh and NY in early August??? IMTX conditions. That much humidity sounds horrible.

We ski each season at Tremblant so I've driven all the roads many times.  The rolling hills are not terrible. Based on the elevation profile, I figure it will be similar to IMC and IMLP, and not as bad as IMSG.

The cooler weather, lower humidity, scenery and clean water/air should make it a great first IM.

Jim I am very, very strongly considering this ra e next year. Now that I hear you are interested it definitely increases my chance of pulling the trigger!

Fred, I was planning on doing IM Can in Penticton in 2012 for the 3rd year in a row, but when I saw this race announcement I quickly changed my mind.

So in!! Awesome news and very excited!

My husband and I were planning on IMC next year which would be super cool with the 30th anniversary and all but M-T is much more accessible to us and we can even plan to go train there.  Will be my first!!

If I make it through the Active.com gauntlet, I am 100% IN on this one.  Too cool of a place, a little closer than IMLP for me.

Then I need to figure out where the heck to stay!

Even though IM NYC is literally @ my doorstep, I am so grossed out by that race, that it is off the radar and makes Tremblant waaaaay more appealing. I have swam in the Hudson. One and done!

Tremblant is only an 8 hour drive for me, 3 more than Placid already is. I consider that pretty close for an IM distance race. Decisions....

perhaps the rumored as-much-as-$1000 entry fee may dissuade you further...

Wow, a barge start? Interesting. I know they throw you off a boat at Alcatraz, but is this a first for an IM, I wonder.

And yeah, the $1000 entry should keep a lot of people out. Plus the stay in New York, you gotta have some deep pockets for this one.

Also considering this one for next year. Looks like an incredibly inspiring area to race.

I like the one loop swim. Hesitant about a 2x out-n-back bike course though. Good for spectators, and I've heard it's gorgous out there, but all that back and forth seems tedious and possibly crowded for drafting; but what do I know, I've never done an out-n-back IM course. Maybe the hills will break people up.

Will the roads be entirely closed? Are they two lanes or four? If it's 2 lanes with traffic on course then there's a safety issue. You have cars passing cyclists and coming head on into other cyclists, especially with the number of athletes WTC jams onto its courses. The language I read on the IM site was the generic spectator warning, 'don't follow your athlete in your car, and expect delays if you're driving on course roads,' which indicates roads will be open. Anyone know or have experience with crowded out-n-back bike courses to dispell my hesitations?

etccallhome82 - 2011-06-06 9:31 PM
For those worrying about road quality... the province just announced a $6M investment to bring the course up to WTC standards.

x2 on Fred's concerns re: road quality, even after reading the above quoted. Call me a pessimist, but (a) I don't see this amount of 'province money' going into significantly repaving or improving the roads and (b) "WTC standards" are not impressive if IMLP roads are up to those standards. Road quality was garbage last year for long stretches of that course IMHO.

Just booked lodging for Thurs-Tues. Just gotta get in on Wed! LOL!

If you stay in one of the resort's hotels, the cancelation policy is VERY liberal. I wound up with a suite so I could have a full kitchen.

Here's a dumb question from someone who has never registered for an IM.  When registration opens on Wednesday, where will a link appear?  On the IM website or Active.com or both?

Not a dumb question - I was wondering the same thing.  I haven't registered for IM online before.

I am booked as well - 1bdrm condo near where Jon (wshtertriathlete) is.  Sounds like I need to add Monday night though for the post-race party!!!

Ready for the battle with Active.com at high noon on Wed!

nope, it is a GOOD Q! I am going to go through the http://ironmanmonttremblant.com/site first, then check active.com. Let's hope active.com doesn't crap out with IM NYC registering @ the same exact time.
