Now, before you tell me, I know that a HUGE percentage of saddle discomfort is overcome just through spending the time riding it.

So, a few questions:

How much time are we actually talking before saddle discomfort should be taken seriously? I've spent about four and a half hours on this one so far, and while I am noticing it getting more comfortable, it's still wreaking havoc on all of my 'soft tissue.' My butt is fine, it's everything else that complains after a ride. I've read some about womens' specific saddles and am considering an upgrade.

What do the women here ride? What have you tried in the past?

Thanks for your help.

I just started training this summer and began riding using the original saddle on a 12-year-old road bike. I was really uncomfortable. After 4 rides, I was sitting at my desk at work in pain and said this is enough. I took the bike into a local bike shop and got a proper fitting. They also suggested a women's saddle--a gel model that they described as more of a "starter saddle" (a Serfas Women's RX). A starter saddle in that some women start using this saddle to get toughed up a bit but then "graduate" to more of a racing saddle.

The combination of tweaking the saddle height and the women's saddle did the trick. Sure, I still feel it a bit but it's nothing like the pain I had previously.

I know the convention advice here is to tough it out, but for me the problem was really an (old) saddle that was not suited to my anatomy.

A lot of women swear by the Terry Saddle. This was what I was going to purchase initially, but wound up going with the LBS suggestion of the gel saddle. Here is the thread I started asking about the Terry:

I had a great experience with Speedy Reedy purchasing my wet suit, but for help on my bike I went to Elliott Bay Bicycles--where I bought my 94 Specialized Allez those many years ago.
