Subject: Benefit of Hot tub after swim workout?

I have noticed a bunch of people at my gym jump in the hot tub after they are done with their swim workout.  Is there any benefit to this?  possibly help with recovery?

The pool drops your body temp (slightly) which makes most people hungry. The hot tub might decrease your food cravings after you swim. Just a guess.

I do it sometimes if I'm at the right pool...feels nice, warm, relaxing. I do it because I like it, though, not for training benefit.

This is why I (sometimes) do it.  If I don't, I will be starving in a short amount of time.

I do it because it feels good and helps me get rid of some of the dizziness I get after long swim sessions.  I look forward to the hottub time...especially when it's cold outside. It's my reward for jumping in the pool and getting my swim done.

First time I've heard this explanation for why I am starving after a 60 min swim. Totally makes sense. I could clear out the fridge after a swim but have trouble even thinking about food for quite a bit of time after a 2+ hour run. No hot tub at my gym, but there is a sauna. May have to give it a try.

I usually go to the tub for a few minutes after a swim. Helps to relax my shoulders. I also will often stretch in the hot tub. My PT says that is a good idea.

If the girls from the masters class jump in, yes.

Purely social.

I get in my hot tub when I get home after a swim, ride, or run. Most tangible benefit to me is the view is great (overlooks a bay) and makes my beer taste even colder.

Agreed!! I've wondered why I get soooo hungry after I swim. During a tri or a brick workout, I have to have a gel or I'm starving 10 minutes after the swim. I'll have to experiment with the hot tub!!

There is a little benefit, but you must be careful as you might overheat if you stay in there too long.

5minutes is plenty and then taking a cold shower will help reduce post workout soreness

For relaxation and social mingling. I find my body responds better to ice after a hard workout. However, swimming in cold water (or in an outdoor pool in cold weather) is a different beast.

What about benefits BEFORE the workout? I'm brand new to the site and recently took up swimming. I used to be in relatively good shape but recently got up to 260 (5'10").. I had a spinal fusion ten years ago, so swimming is much easier for me, at least til I drop some weight. Does the spa help in loosening muscles before, cause that's what I've been doing? I also go in after and not noticed being hungry at all afterward. It's been almost three weeks, and the most I've done is 45 mins, with an average of 25 mins. Hoping to get up to an hour consistently.

Because you can pee in the hot tub and nobody else will notice.

I end all of my "in gym" work out with a combo of steam room and hot tub treatment. I do it because I enjoy it and I think it helps me relax.

Steam Room especially seems help clean by sinuses feel clear.

I jump in too right after my swim - I love putting my muscles on the jets and just letting them go to work. Plus I love the hot water - feels great!

Yup,  sometimes I'm fighting off calf or foot cramps at the end of a Master's workout and a few minutes of stretching in the hot tub relieves it - but I think most of the others are in there for the social aspect.
