Subject: Belwood "Fat" Try a Tri

The Belwood Try a Tri is coming up on July 24th.  There is something called a "Fat" Try a Tri which looks like using an off road bike.  My question is....does anyone go out and actually spend the big bucks on an off road bike, or just rent one...or because it looks like a fairly rare thing...is a Canadian Tire special mountain bike perfectly acceptable or will you be laughed off the course?

Never done one, so would like to know what to prepare for!

Anything is acceptable (though a road bike is not recommended for this course)- and it's a Try a Tri.  You will see a complete assortment and collection of different types of bikes from the 80's vintage, to Cdn Tire Specials, to high end mountain bikes.  Bring what ya got.

I did my first try a tri at Belwood three years ago. I swam in a widnsurf wetsuit and used an old and heavy mountain bike wich was ok for that course. You will see all kinds of bikes some fancy and some not so. Being your first tri, I wouldn't espend any money in equipment, that will come later. Enjoy it, it's a nice race to start.

My husband and I are doing it too, and we are using regular old mountain bikes. We did the Milton try-a-tri this year as well and there was a huge assortment of bikes, although I must say there were way more road bikes then I was expecting and really nice ones at that.
