Is there a real advantage to having a transition bag over a gym bag or backpack?  Since you're laying out the transition area anyway, do the extra compartments, easy access, etc. really make a difference?  Or is it just an excuse to spend money and look like a real triathlete?

That said, I paid $30 (or less?) for a TYR backpack and I feel like it's way beyond earned its worth not just in triathlon but in international travel.

On the other hand, for smaller races I did earlier on, this $5 Target backpack worked great.

However, it's really handy having all the compartments and waterproof bag; the backpack pretty much packs itself so you don't forget anything (it's obvious--wetsuit here, shoes here, helmet here, etc).

I use the bag as a checklist when I'm packing to go to another state for a tri. If there's an empty compartment, I forgot something.

For local races it's not so important but when you're an 18 hour drive away from home it sucks to realize your running shoes are sitting by the door so you won't forget them.

I can see the benefit if you ride your bike to the race or as others mentioned use it as a back-up checklist, but I have used the same gym bag for 3 years and done just fine and never forgot anything.   To me its an "extra" and if money is tight you can certainly do without and if you decide to spend for it, I don't think you would regret it.

For me it was mostly about spending money and looking like a real triathlete.

That being said. I have a Blue Seventy large bag. Having a water proof compartment for the wet suite is very helpful. It wears like a backpack, so I have ridden my bike to the race location from the hotel many times with no problems. And it makes for a great weekend travel case as well. Fits neatly into the overhead bin.

FWIW, I’ve seen lots of people use 5 gal buckets. Stows your gear and makes a great seat in the transition area when putting your running shoes on.

I don't know about anyone else, but I used a laundry basket and it worked great!!! Seriously an oval shaped, flexible laundry basket. It is waterproof and large enough to carry everything you need. It also stands out great when your exhausted and trying to locate your gear at the finish line. But honestly I would like to have a tri-bag, but I don't have the extra cash in the budget.....yet!

I've got an awesome backpack (not a transition bag) and I love it!  That thing is probably close to 10 yrs old at this point.  Mine has straps with buckles on each side which are perfect for clipping my helmet and race belt to and three compartments (the main, the typical smaller one, and a loose one on the outside)

Compartments really are nice because things have their own place and it makes packing the night before as well as setting up your transition easier.  I will say that backpacks (or a backpack transition bag) are the way to go though because I've had races where I've had to park pretty far from the transition area so having the ability to bike there and/or back was appreciated.  Just make sure your helmet is on and buckled!

I use a cheap duffle/gym bag (pretty large) that I picked up at Wally World some years ago. One big compartment, enough for all the gear except the bike...

It use to be just my college backpack re-commissioned over the summers.  Somehow when all of my roommates and I departed our college house I was +1 Speedo backpack.  One large compartment and two side pockets.  Been working perfect for 8 years now.   If you need compartments to know you didn't forget something while packing I guess that works.  I just lay it all out on the bed while packing and go through the race in my head to be sure I have all the equipment.  Or use the laminated list USAT gives out.

I used a gym bag for my first two tris and am much happier with my $50 TYR transition bag.  Easily the best value-for-price tri purchase I've made in four years.

I just use an old backpack.  I've modified it with rubberbands on the outside so my helmet can be strapped on it as well.  It works out really well.

I use a Zoot bag and swear by it.  I like the fact that the shoe compartments hold my size 14 boats and, as others have said, I use it as a check list.  I feel like I could pack for a race in my sleep but it's helpful to look in a specific compartment for items instead of shuffling around the bottom of an open space when looking for a particular item, i.e. Gu or goggles or something small.

I used a big duffel bag for the first few years. I got a TYR tri backpack last Christmas so I’ve had it for less than a full season, but so far I much prefer it. I agree with the “checklist” idea and also I like that everything I use for the race has a particular place that’s specifically designed to hold it.

I didn't want to buy a "tri" backpack, since I had an ok daypack that the wife had won. But riding from car to transition it was a bit tough getting everything in (I'd end up riding on top of my bike shoes) or I'd have a 2nd smaller bag for the wetsuit.

So after last race I caved and bought the new Desoto v5 trans bag and I can already tell it's going to be great, even just for the wetsuit section. I'm going to use it when I take my crap camping as well - 1 bag for my shoes, wetsuit, etc. I don't even think it's that big (I was expecting HUGE).

I think if you don't use wetsuits you could use almost any bag.

I recently got a TYR transition bag, and I think the wetsuit compartment is the feature that I could not replicate with a regular gym bag.

Any bag will work.  That being said, I love my transition bag.

First year used a big duffel-sort of bag.  I still use that one for my swim stuff for training, but it is annoying to try to find all the small things in the bottom.  Plus it slides off my shoulder if I try to ride with it to/from a race.

Very happy with my purchase.

In just use a large Nike duffle that normally is my "swim bag".

Tri backpacks look clever, but I don't really need something else taking up space in the bottom of my closet that is only used a half dozen times a year.

I have a TYR swim backpack that works for all my purposes. I carry my workout stuff in it to/from work, use it for transition bag purposes, and occasionally when I travel. Best X-mas gift I've had in a long time.

I use different bags depending on the race distance and location. It really depends on how you like to organize your gear and carry it to the race. I'm very organized and like to have everything in the same place for each race. If you're going to ride your bike from the car to the transition area a backpack is the best option. I used my kids old school backpacks for the first few triathlon years.

The best bag for traveling out of state to a HIM or IM distance race is the larger Zoot backpack.

http://www.trisports.com/zoot-tri-bag1.html

It fits in the overhead compartment of airplanes. The best thing about this bag are the multiple compartments for your wetsuit, shoes, bike shoes, aero helmet and anything else you might possibly ever need. It has been too large to use in most transition areas so I normally carry a small backpack when traveling.

Total waste of money.  I use a Vera Bradley beach bag.  I may look more like a suburban housewife than an athlete, but who really cares?  It gets the job done.
