I have an opportunity to purchase a 2009 Orbea Orca with Dura Ace and Reynolds Wheels.  This bike is $7000 new and the guy wants $3500 including the Aero Bars. The LBS he purchased it from has vouched for its condition as A+.   I can't really find any comparables on the internet so I am not sure if this is a good deal.  Any advice on the bike in general as well as the deal would be greatly appreciated.

It's either an ORA or an ORDU. No such thing as an Orbea Orca.

If it's an ORA, that seems a little bit steep... I have an Orbea Ora, 2008 model, full Dura Ace and race wheels and all told I paid $5100 for it in 2009. So... How much do the Reynolds wheels retail for? And be careful, I had an issue with a hairline crack in my Ora frame... Orbea replaced it for me. I now ride a 2010 frame with all the same other components.

The Ordu is the Orbea's stealthy high end carbon frame. If it's that, I think it's a pretty good deal. Cool

There's definitely an Orca model made by Orbea.  It's a step up from the Ora.  I believe his list price is correct.  It sounds like a good deal, but I would see if you can have it checked out by your LBS for your own piece of mind.

Do you want a road bike?

Did you check Ebay closed auctions to see what similar bike has sold for.

How many miles does it have?

If you are in the market for a high end road bike, $3500 is a good starting point on this bike.  Some things to consider are:

1.  Do you need (it's really more like want) Dura Ace?

2.  Do you want the Reynolds Wheels?  (assuming we're talking about a semi deep carbon clincher?)

These two points are where a good chunk of the price is coming from and they do not make the bike any faster than if it came with 105 and any other set of cheaper aero wheels.  It is gorgeous though.

These are the concerns I have.  I love eye candy and high end components so I am a sucker for these things.  Do I need them.   No.  Do I want it....Maybe.   I am fairly new to Tri even though I have been biking a while.  It does come with Aero bars so I could see if I like the tri position.  My big Dilemma is exactly one of the points made above.  I can get a 105 set on a brand new carbon Giant TCR for less money.  Or I can keep my Giant Defy and use the money to buy a tri bike as well.  Tough choice though because it is a real nice bike.  According the LBS bike has about 3000 miles on it.

It may be a good deal, but you really have to some homework when you shop for an Orca.  Orbea made some significant changes to the Orca frames from year to year during the the past few years.  They made them considerably stiffer and lighter between 2008 and 2011.  That may not be important to you, but it definitely has an impact on the re-sale price.

As another poster suggested, I'd check eBay for current and closed listings to see what 2009's have been selling for.

Thanks.  I have researched it some and in 2009 they made a major change in the frame.  It is a desirable model but $3500 for a used bike is a lot of cake.

The LBS I work at just sold a brand new 2009 Orca with DA7800 for $3300...so I'm going with no.

If you have a servicable road bike, do you want to upgrade to another road bike?

Based on your second last post, it sounds more like you would prefer to keep the road bike you have and get a tribike. Also, you mention that this bike has aerobars but it would be easy (and much cheaper) to get a set of clipons for your Defy and go from there.

Personally I wouldn't spend that much for a used road bike, regardless of what components are hanging on the frame, but I would rather have several nice bikes than one great bike.

Oh my! I should have checked my Orbea models. I can't believe they named a bike after a whale?!??!

I know nothing about the Orca. (The bike or the whale

Carry on.

Great Advice from all.  I think I will start looking for a Tri Bike and just keep riding my Defy with my road group.  What is a good Tri bike at the $.3500 price point?

A Cervelo P2 @ $2400 and a big chunk of money towards a set of race wheels. There are a ton of amazing tri bikes between $2400 and $3500.

Damn.  That's sex on wheels.  Those Orca's are hot styled bikes.  Lust!

I just wanted to post the photo again.

I picked up a new Trek Speed Concept 7.2 fully loaded with pedals, shoes, comp, etc... for $3500
It's incredibly fast and I think it looks great.  Cervélo has a lot of good models as well.
