Only wear it if you can sustain at least 22mph for the entire race.

If you can't then the aero advantage is negligible, and you will look like a slow poser, or like someone who bought the helmet so he could wear it while he watches the TDF.

"slow poser"?  Is there such a thing as a "fast poser"?

Heck, I get accused of being a poser by just showing up at the race...Wink

Hmmm good point...

All in jest anyway. I say wear the helmet, won't hurt you and should help you.

I wouldn't wear it because potential issues with the buckle if you have put it on and taken it off a few times, adjustment, practice getting it on and off with your sunglasses, etc.

In a short event it will save you a hand full of seconds- if everything goes well. If you have to fumble with the chin strap or your sunglasses for even 20-30 seconds then it is a wash...

I'm a fuddy-duddy. Noting new on race day.... Tongue out

Exactly my thoughts. I can see how an aero helmet could make a noticeable difference in longer events, but in a sprint--not so much.

Nothing new on race day.

Nothing new on race day.

I don't know how fast or competitive the OP is but keep in mind that for a shorter event, podium spots and AG standings are often decided by seconds, or a "hand full of seconds"

I think that was Tom's point--the "handful of seconds" wasted putting on/taking off an unfamiliar helmet.

Yes, but my point is that if you "waste" 3 seconds fumbling with the new helmet, but "save" 8 seconds from the aerodynamics, that could easily be the difference in an AG standing by a net savings of 5 seconds.

I realize this all sounds ridiculous coming from me, Ms. BOP Foot in mouth

i get this is a beginner site but wow.....helmet really? i get a new bike with a different position but HELMET????

i went from the GA2 to specialized TT2 without test for a half iron.  never worn a swim skin and raced it 1st time.  change my gel....NOT FLASK my gel type on the fly.  worn a brand new untested top.

somethings just aren't that complicated.  especially for a sprint.  you will be on the bike for 30-35 min.

people that say "it will only save you a couple of seconds" never stood on the podium or lost the podium by 1-5 seconds.  i have.  wear that b!tch...its a great helmet....put it on a dozen times walk around the house in it for 10 min so u see how it feels the end.

I have never...repeat NEVER...worn my aero helmet in training.  I do just fine with it during races (from sprint to HIM thus far)...thank you very much.

I have a Giro Adv2 helmet (though I use a different aero helmet now).  I don't see how the buckling system is any different than a normal road helmet.  If you're going to fumble with a buckle for 3 or even 30 seconds...it's not going to be because of the helmet...it's because you're a clutz.

Go for it. I've used lots of new things on race days over the years. Most work out fine, sometimes not. That's the way life is.

How long is the race?

I'm in the "Always do something new on race day."

In the spirit of full disclosure: While my last several races have all included something new, that didn't always work to well for me. Worst was my first half ironman when I rode a new bike I had less than 10 miles on. But it was a fast looking bike so it all turned out okay.

Sprints are perfect for that.  Even if it sucks, it's only 14 +/-.
