Subject: Nothing New on Race Day?

The UPS man just delivered my new Giro Advantage 2 aero helmet.  I've got a race on Saturday, but not planning to ride between now and then unless it's a couple of short laps around the 'hood.

So should I wear it in my race?  I'm thinking yes, but since this is my first aero helmet was wondering if there is any downside that I haven't thought about.  (I did wear it around the house for a while last night to get used to it while I was watching the TdF on TV - just hope none of my neighbors saw me...).

Yes - I should wear it.
No  - Nothing new on raceday.

Thanks,

Mark

Don't do it. Nothing new on race day.

Is the upside advantage worth the potential downside exposure?

What are the yes and no of the poll for?

Yes to wear it or Yes to doing nothing new on race day?

A helmet is one thing that might be a not that bad thing to wear for the first time on race day. But then again I'd worn my Advantage 2 helmet a grand total of 30 minutes biking before I wore it for B2B full.

Good choice in helmets, BTW.

How long is the race?  If it's a sprint, I'd say go for it.  If it's an IM, I'd say no way.  If it's somewhere in between, I'd go with some form of heads / tails...

I'd wear it.  I would try it out on a few laps on the bike, though.  Just make sure that it doesn't slip around or cause trouble when you're in the aerobars.

Might be a bit warmer than your normal helmet, but I vote yes. Just practice putting it on quickly for transition, I always have a hard time with that helmet because of the tight ear flaps.

Disclaimer: advice coming from a guy who moved his bike cleats just prior to an IM. Although I now know to NEVER do that...again

New things on last weekend's race:

New Aero helmet worn for the first time.

New disk cover (I had used it twice on the trainer to check for mechanical issues, but had never ridden it outside.)

Switched from gel packs to gel flasks for the first time.

Had an 11 minute PR.

With that being said, I could have just as easily been posting about some disaster caused by my untested changes to routine.

I think a new helmet on race day is a non issue as long as you have practiced getting it on and off a couple times and that it doesn't hurt your head.

How long is the race? Is it an A race?

If not long and A I'd probably wear my new one.

I have trouble with aero helmets getting them over my ears and harder to get on than normal helmet. I'd suggest trying to put it on quickly quite a few times at home like you would in T1.

For clarification - "yes" is I should wear it; "no" is I shouldn't.

The race is a sprint, with a 14 mile bike.

Yep, I did realize immediately that the ear flaps make it a bit tougher to put on.  Once I got the straps adjusted, I practiced putting it on and taking it off last night.

Holy cow, where's the question, then? 30-45 minutes in the helmet? Wear it.

Yeah, practice on/off a while as you're watching TV this week.

I wouldn't wear it because potential issues with the buckle if you have put it on and taken it off a few times, adjustment, practice getting it on and off with your sunglasses, etc.

In a short event it will save you a hand full of seconds- if everything goes well. If you have to fumble with the chin strap or your sunglasses for even 20-30 seconds then it is a wash...

I'm a fuddy-duddy. Noting new on race day.... Tongue out

Creative compromise:

NO you shouldn't do anything new on race day.
YES you should probably use your new helmet.

So, if you aren't going to go for a ride....wear it around the house or something anyway.  Put it on and take it off repeatedly. Get used to it one way or the other.

How important is the race to you? If it's not one of your most important of the season, I think some things new on race day might not be such a bad thing, granted you're okay with any potential negative effects.

I voted yes, but that's before I realized it meant wear the helmet.  I thought it meant, "yes, nothing new on race day."  That being said, if you can wear it for a ride before the race, you might be able to wear it this weekend.

Only wear it if you can sustain at least 22mph for the entire race.

If you can't then the aero advantage is negligible, and you will look like a slow poser, or like someone who bought the helmet so he could wear it while he watches the TDF.

Good grief.  It's not going to make you puke, rub your arse raw, or screw up your bike fit.

Wear it.

Unless you can't adapt to a new buckle before race day.

Just as a sidebar, expect those earflaps to start to split after a few uses. My dealer told me Giro said about 10% fail like that but talking to folks around here 10 out of 10 reported splitting. They replaced mine under warranty and I ebayed the replacement and bought something else. Perhaps Tom might have additional insight.
