My training for Full Marathons alone has always been to run up to 20 mile training runs on the month before the full marathon. Some of my triclub friends recommend not running those long training runs, which approach is better for the run training for a full ironman?

Lots of good discussion on the topic in this thread.

Read the thread posted above.  I just finished Lake Placid for my first IM.  Next IM I will not exceed 16 miles or 2.5 hour runs.  This year I did 2 18 milers in approximately 2:50-3:00 and it was tough to recover from the rest of the week.

I did maybe 4 17s and an 18 all around 2:25 to 2:35.  My IM mary was 3:45.  Ya I think I can do better, but I don't think doing 20s would have helped at all.  You cerntainly don't want to go over 3 hours at any rate, especially if you did a 7 hour bike the day before.

Think about having strong weekly volume instead of 20+ milers.  I do one or two 18 milers (2:30ish).

I run based on time and pace, not miles.  But in general, that gave me about 2-3, 17-18 mile runs prior to my IM.
