I'm in, just registered yesterday... first HIM.  Also considered the Hunterdon and Pocono events but the mountains/climbs made this an easy choice to make, especially doing this distance for the first time.  My other car is also a Felt.

Hey Colesdad,

Again we find ourselves in similar boats.  I too also contemplated the poconos HIM. In the end it was the money that pushed me to the moderately priced Shoreman.

Are you driving down the day of or getting a hotel?

Not sure if you were addressing me or Colesdad, but I'm getting a hotel.  The race will be challenging enough without dealing with 3 hours of sleep and a 2 hour drive.

I'm in Jersey City, do most of my biking/running at Liberty State Park.  Took Friday off to rest, prepare & drive down.. making a beach weekend out of this race, same as the july "double trouble" race in seaside heights which was a lot of fun.

Nice nice.  I'm in Manalapan, central Jersey-ish.  Not taking friday off but am driving down on Sat morning...only about an hour drive to the race site.  Not gonna sleep much that night anyway

Good luck to you!

Good luck to you too.  I saw your thread regarding driving home- I wouldn't worry about it if I was you- just relax after the race & get something to eat, take your time... stop for a break & some coffee if necessary.

Exactly what I plan to do!  drive a half hour, stop and eat, and then drive the rest of the way (maybe 45 min more).

Cheers,

Jeff

I am not doing the race but I might ride the bike course this Sunday or Monday with some friends that are doing the race.  I have heard the bike course may have to be changed do to the hurricane last weekend, and a bridge that is still under water.

According to the website the bike course has been changed to a two loop course due to two bridges being washed out. If you ride it please post a report. My buddy is paranoid? (its his first half) about the "several rolling hills". I keep telling him its the f'in Pine Barrens..there are no hills.. but maybe he'll listen to someone who pre-rides the course.  We're actulally staying in Seaside Heights the night before and driving down in the morning. See you guys there..

My other car is also a Felt

Mike?

I am doing the race--just signed up last week.  Will be doing the 90min drive there from my home in the Philly 'burbs on race morning (up at 4am for pre-race breakfast anyway ).

I have ridden about half of the course (overlaps with the Jersey Genesis triathlon) and there is nothing even remotely resembling a 'hill' there.  Very gradual incline is about all you will see.  At least prior to the storm, most of the roads there were in pretty nice shape.

Eh, you never know.  Something might come up and create a rest day.  But short workouts generally keep me feeling more 'fresh' than complete rest as long as I get enough sleep at night.

Anyway, hope flooding doesn't get any worse out there and the swim stays as well.

My friends that were racing were praying for rain at about mile 4 of the run.

Yeah so things really heated up during the run.  The sun was out in full force, the shade became sparse, the temp climbed to about 90 & some of the water stations ran out of cups.... yikes.  Just about everyone that I saw had to mix in some intervals of walking.  For me, the real race began at mile 3 of the run.

Overall I had a very posititve first experience at this distance, DQ Events puts on a good event.

I was estimating about a 6 hr finish & came in at 6:20.

What did the other participants think & how'd you do?

I injured my foot a month ago and wasn't sure I'll be able to run. It turned out to be such a nice day I did the whole thing anyway... 6:29:+ (My first HIM also)

Swim 47:57 (I'm a slow swimmer. It was a fair time for me.)

Bike 3:03:29 (That's 57.5 chugging 18.8 mph! I was happy with that.)

Run 2:33:+ (I could've walked faster. But I couldn't have expected more, I hadn't trained in 3 weeks and it was my first 13 miles too!)

I'm glad I did the whole thing. Now I can wear the shirt proudly without any qualm. But, what's with the 3/4 length sleeves?

As far as the sun's concerned, yes it was a tad bit too warm, but hey, people are doing Badwater in July. All-in-all I think it was a great day for the event especially the water temperature. It was just perfect.

Thought it was a well-done race.  They benefitted a lot from the Jersey Genesis crew's experience in hosting a race at this venue.  Like others, would have preferred if the cloud cover had stayed for the duration of the run.  I placed well, but I really struggled on the run and finished about 15min slower than I would have hoped.  Can't blame all that (or even most of that) on the heat, though.  My own fitness/pacing played a much bigger role.  Good chance I'll be back in 2012.

5:01:25 does not constitute placing well. It implies placing first in age category and 8th overall. Great Job! 57.5 miles in 2:30:30 I aspire to get there someday.
