I'm currently training for my first Sprint in October. Live in Sarasota. Doing more open water training but thwarted by the weather of late. Where to folks like to train? Any indoor pools that reliably stay open even in bad weather?  Don't mind swimming in a little rain but heavy rain and thunder/lightening is not a good plan.

There are groups that do organized swims at both Siesta and Lido beaches.  You judge distace by the lifeguard stands.

There is a public outdoor pool at Arlington Park.  The Y has a 25yard pool at the branch off Bahia Vista & Tuttle and a Oly distance down south near the mall.  Both of them close if there is any HINT of lightning.  They are a bit too paranoid in my opinion.

I train at the Arlington pool.  During the week the kid's swim team uses half the lanes until 6PM.  I usually go then, which also is after most the afternoon showers have passed.  They are open until 7:30PM.  Cost is $4 (or $2 if you're over 55 like me).  They're open from 12-5 on Saturdays.

If you do not mind the extra drive. In sand key (clearwater beach area) on tuesday nights there is a group swim with "Outspokin'" bike store. On weds there is a group swim with the St pete mad dogs in tierra verde area.

Sorry to revive an old thread...

I am going to be visiting Sarasota during the week of Thanksgiving and would love to do some open water swimming.

Should I check out the beaches, Siesta and Lido, listed above? Is there anywhere that would have a natural landmark to aim for (and rest) like a sandbar or something?

What should I expect for water temps at that time of year?

Thanks in advance!

Siesta has buildings that you can use to sight swimming either from the North or the South, but for whatever reason most start from the South and go North then back.  Swim all of the buoys both ways and it is right under a mile.  Not really a sandbar, but just swim closer to shore where you can stand up if you want to rest.  The water should still be around 80 then.

The local tri club has a FB page where they post some organized rides, runs and swims...

Heading there on Saturday. Really excited for the trip. As a landlubber whose only OWS experience is in lakes I have to ask the annoying question...

Do I have to worry about sharks at all? I don't think I'm really worried about dying but I suppose it's a real possibility that I will see one, right? Just more worried about freaking out than being attacked.

I read an article in a magazine about a really experienced OW swimmer whose attitude is "I have as much right to be there as the animals". Maybe that attitude will help me...I'm more worried about swimming along happy as a clam and then having some dark shadow come close.

No need to worry about sharks, unless you like swim in fresh chum by yourself just before dawn or at dusk.

The earlier post about the water temps being around 80 is a bit optimistic; lower 70's is more like it.

Hope you enjoy your week here in Sarasota.

Glad that you had a good visit.  And thanks for contributing some tourist dollars to the local economy...Wink
