Subject: Bike Travel Bag - Why Not This Cheap One?

With permission from The Bear to ask away with my bike newbie questions, I am trying to be ready well ahead of a trip where I am flying with my bike. I am on southwest, so even though there's no way I can see getting a bike under 62 total package inches, it's a cheaper alternative than most.

Looking into bike travel gear, I'm a bit spooked by the high price, but then again, I'm not riding a $5k bike, I'm on a Raleigh Revenio, a $1k bike.I still don't want it crushed obviously.

When I find a deal online that is a huge price discrepancy from everything else, I get skeptical, but if it meets my purposes, why not?

Is there any reason I shouldn't consider this bike bag at a fraction of the cost of others?

If I measured correctly, I can fit my bike into this with the wheels off.

Next question: how mechanically inclined do I have to be to learn how to break this thing down for packing?

It may just be me... but I wouldn't trust any bike inside a soft case going through the airport luggage handlers making it back intact... YMMV.

Secondly, I wouldn't by anything on ebay from anyone overseas... again, YMMV.

I would also not want to use a soft case.  Have you looked into renting a hard case?  I rented a hard case for a week from the LBS for $50.  They even packed it for me.  I am not very mechanically inclined, but I was able to reassemble the bike and break it back down for packing.  I just asked the guys at the LBS how to do it and they gave me a crash course.

That bag says "dent me" all over it.

Say goodbye to your wheels.  And possibly frame.  Yep, this is a bad idea.  Bike boxes/carriers is not an area I would go too cheap in.  Make it a hard case, at least, with good internal padding.

This is probably my best course of action. My LBS where I got it is actually an Amish run bike shop, so I wouldn't expect them to have a travel case in stock, but on the other hand, most people wouldn't expect them to have carbon bikes either. All the latest tech in bikes, but no electricity. And, a 10 minute drive from my house. If they don't have one, I have several in my area. Someone is bound to have one.

I can't even wrap my head around this well enough to ask a question.

I got a Thule hard case for $180. I've beaten the hell out of it, taken it around the world twice, lent it to other people who've taken it all over Asia, and had an Argentinian dogo chew on it. Everything about it, even the rollie wheels, has stayed strong and all bikes have made it to their destinations and back unscathed.
