So my HIM tomorrow has a mandatory check in today with the bike.  It's suppose to rain through the evening into tomorrow morning.

I'm wondering what to cover on the bike.  I know it sounds silly but I've never done this before.

I've got a bag for the seat and a bag for the handle bars.  Is there anything else I should cover? The chain...gears...?

You'll be fine with nothing on the bike.  If you think about it when you get out of the water you're soaking wet and you set on the seat and grab the handlebars.

The only thing I'd cover would be electronics if you've got a power tap or a computer on your bike.

edit.  I'm driving to Des Moines today for a race tomorrow and it's down pouring outside.  My fancy Tri bike will be on the back of the car the whole way getting soaked from head to toe.

Why are you covering the seat? So when you come out of the water, dripping wet, you have a dry seat?

I got a "Chain Condom" after a few years of nothing just to make myself feel better about leaving the poor bike out in the rain overnight when I'm in a checkin the day before kinda race but I would not feel all that weird just leaving the bike out.

Bring a towel with you the day of the race and wipe the bike down.

I'm driving to Des Moines today too. Coming from the other direction and it's pouring here as well. Looks like a great race day tomorrow though.

To the OP: There isn't anything on a bike that can't get wet. Cover your electronics if you are worried about them.

Some races don't allow you to cover the seat with a plastic bag. As the plastic cover could blow off and get tangled in others gears. Don't cover your seat. As others said "you'll already be wet after the swim"

I've used an old swim cap to cover the seat and have removed the pads from the aero bars.  Otherwise, my bike survived torrential rains before my HIM in June.

Same thing happened to me; I only covered the seat and my bike computer.  What sucked though was finding a huge puddle under my bike.  I brought a towel with me that morning so that I could dry my feet at transition; ended up getting soaked before I could use it.

Good point on the seat thing...never really thought about already being wet when I get on it.  I think I'm going to cover my bars though if they allow it.

Covering the seat seems like a complete waste of time...

Will you dry off before you get on the bike?  Will you skip the ride if it is raining on race day?

I wouldn't cover anything.  Remove the computer and bring it back with me on race morning, along with bottles and anything else that could blow loose from wind.  (I like to freeze fluids the night before anyway when I can.) That goes for expected rain or not. I am concerned about things getting lost or stolen, not so much about them getting wet.  I'll get them wet myself thankyouverymuch.
