Subject: Bike-run-swin Tri. On Gravel

I am going to do a sprint that is a bike run swim.  The bike and run are on a reclaimed RR line with a hard pack gravel surface.  I have not done the swim last.  Whats the thought on this type of Tri.  The swim in in a pool.  I borrowed a bike for the gravel that is a cross type bike with 80 psi tires.

Thanks  Dan

Well, at least all the gravel dust bill be washed off in the swim so you will look good for your podium picture!

I think a cyclocross bike would be ideal on this type of surface. On gravel roads around here in training I usually run 60-70 psi for a more comfortable ride with less jarring on the arms and legs.

Define "gravel" please. That's a pretty generic term like "cold" is.

If it's truly hard packed like a dirt road and has no loose stuff kicking up, then a good file tread tire and your road bike is the best choice. Like these: http://www.biketiresdirect.com/product/schwalbe-marathon-plus-700c

If it's 1/4" stone dust granite which is loosely laid and can kick up and slide, then a low profile cyclocross tire would be best. Like these: http://www.cyclocrossworld.com/Michelin-Jet-Clincher_p_226.html

If it's double track trail used as a fire road, then yeah; you want a full on cyclocross tire with knobbys. Like these: http://www.cyclocrossworld.com/Clement-Crusade-PDX-Clincher_p_593.h...

It's a pool swim? Seems like a unique venue to have a pool proximal to a rail trail.

The Event is at Deadwood, SD.  It should be super pretty with a few tunnels.  The swim is in the Rec center in the middle of town.  I am curious to see how the bike compares to the road as far as energy expended. Its a last minute deal for me so I am going to use the borrowed bike and enjoy the scenery.

I did a running race before in Deadwood, SD and it was beautiful!  It ranks up there as one of my favorite races. Your cross bike should work great.  Best of luck and enjoy!
