Subject: Aero Jacket question

Yet another bike question.....the joy of getting bike ready for a race.

Zipp 404s that I have aero jacket on. I spoke to Wheelbuilder couple times about issue I have that cover impinges the hub. They suggested I cut the hole on the drive side larger. I did it a year ago and it was very uneven. After talking with them yesterday and watching their You Tube video, I cut the hole slightly bigger and was able to use a circle cutter so it is nice and smooth. Installed it and doesn't look warped.

Put it on my bike and when in my biggest gear of my cassette the rear derailleur on the top jockey pulley rubs against the cover. I use a XT MTB derailleur so I can spin up hills and not bother my injured knee.

What should I do other than not shifting into that gear?

Have you tried duct taping the inside of the cover to the spokes?  That might bring it in just a touch tighter to prevent the rub.

I hadn't thought of that.....good idea.

Duct vs. electric tape?

I use duct tape on mine, works like a charm, keeps it snug against the spokes.  I had the same rubbing issue as well and the tape fixed it right up.

I have used both packing tape (bad idea) and duct tape.  Haven't tried just electrical tape.

Electrical tape wouldn't be strong enough to hold the cover snug against the spokes, especially over a period of time.

I use packing tape and it works well. I take it off (jacket) and on between races though...

You use both. Duct tape in strips inside the drive side cover, taping the cover to the outer spokes. On the non drive side there usually isn't a problem, which is good since you can't duct tape it. Then electrical tape on the outside rim to hold the cover on.

I used electrical tape before the last race series and felt the results were unsatisfactory.  The disc cover was fantastic but the installation could have been better.

After about three days, the electrical tape stretched.  This presented two problems.  First the disc rotated about 1/4".  The valve stem moved from the exact center of the cutout towards the rear.  Second, when my ultegra rear D was shifted all the way over to the big side of the cassete, it would occasionally touch the cover.  Just enough to leave a mark and occasional a sound If I applied a ton of power in that gear.

I plan to use small circles of duct tape on the spokes when I put the cover back on next race.  Duct tape is not thermo elastic but is heavier than electrical tape.  I did not put any tape on the outside of the cover near the rim.

Anyone have photo of how they tape the inside of the cover?

I brought my bike to LBS this morning and he adjusted the rear D so it rubs less and not all the time.

Thanks for the ideas.

I can't remember if it was posted here or slowtwitch, but in the last 2 months someone posted pics of the drive side being taped on the inside of the aerojacket.  Might want to do a search on ST if it's not here.

If not I will take one tonight - I've been meaning to take the cover off (on since IMC)

Edit: Found on ST pretty quick - I used way less tape than that at the center. :

What's wrong with packing tape?  That's what I used and you have me worried now.  Will I not be able to get it off?  I also put a few small strips of electrical tape around the outside edge.  I still get some warping, but it doesnt rub and seems to be on good.

I use packing tape inside the aerojacket as well.  Never had a problem with it.

Whoa that is a lot of tape in that pic.  I use way less tape than that and I only really concentrate on the area around the hub mostly.

Only issue I had with packing tape was when I took it off, small bits of it would stick to the cover rather than it all coming off in one piece.  Duct tape stays together and comes off completely.  Not really that big a deal, just an annoyance for me.

Electrical tape is ok, but any heat exposure and the adhesive will creep.  Duct tape works pretty well.  One thing that works great is hot glue.  Done that a bunch and it will hold for a long while if needed.

Is a long while necessary?   I seem to recall a note in the wheelbuilder instructions saying you should only use for racing and that they are not made to stand up to training.

btw: duct tape works great.
