My "A" Race is Savageman.  Success will be climbing the wall and finishing ...

March 18 ~ IM PR 70.3

June 11 ~ Chesapeake Bay Swim 4.4 Miles

Sept 17 ~ Savageman 70.0

November 18 ~ JFK 50 Mile Run

These are four events that I would just like to complete, not compete.

I am in a mode where I want to try new challenges that will require me to train and push myself. Other than crossing the finish line with a sound body, I don't really have any goals.

Fred D - 2011-10-08 8:46 AM In my humble opinion having 4 'A' races redefines the definition of an 'A' race. 1 perhaps 2 races can be 'A' races from the standpoint of peak performance at most. Now can you do 4 races you care about? Of course. Sounds like a tough buy fun schedule.

Sorry, I had a typo.  Now corrected.

It's do-able, but you will have to monitor yourself carefully.  Be diligent with the workouts, make sure you have a plan for accomplishing this since there is a variety of things going on here.  Staying healthy will be very important.

From my brief review of your log I don't see what is ambitious about this plan.

No real reason that you can't kill all 4 of those races. Only real concern is the 50 mile run, which is so much harder than a 70.3. For best chance of success at JFK I would say get your run volume up after MArch 18. So, do a nice balanced training plan for PR, then start killing it on the run and swim until your swim, then you will be in super hot shape to give it a good run focused training plan for savage man, then just hit 4-5 solid 70 mile weeks going into JFK. That would be sweet.

I know you didn't ask for that type advice but I get a little excited about this stuff.

Yes imo.

Savageman is too close to the ultra.  The rest looks good.  You'll be doing so much bike/swim in spring and then lead up to savageman...with recovery next thing you know you'll be 6 weeks out from a 50 mile race when you've barely run 50 miles in an entire week.  What's the point?  You want to walk 30 miles?  Crossing the finish line with a "sound body" is highly questionable on that one.

edit:  If you are set on it I'd do what Darren said but then Savageman wouldn't be a true A race.  If your bike fitness is weak there you are going to have a slow day no matter where your run is at.  You could just finish though but to me that is different than A race.

No one puts Platypus in the corner!

Sounds fine to me.

to do JFK you'll have to have a lot more run mileage going into Savageman than is probably ideal, considering how much (and hard) bike you'll have to do, but if you have a lot of spare time to train and you can work decent recoveries in there, shouldn't be a problem.

Success will be climbing the wall and finishing ...

I'd call that a nice to have goal but don't pin your race "success" on it.  There's always a chance someone else will swerve and kill your momentum on the wall.  That's just bad luck but it happens.
