I'm looking to join a tri club in nyc. Any thoughts or opinions? There is a lot to choose from.

Thanks,

j.

It depends on what you want out of the club. Some of them (tri-life and Terrier tri for example) are very goal-oriented and structured, while others (Brooklyn tri club) are more about socializing with like-minded people. Asphalt Green, I think is somewhere in the middle.

Thanks. I was actually leaning towards Asphalt Green. My hesitation was getting to the east side.

I appreciate your opinion.

2 other suggestions...Empire tri and Full throttle.  Empire tri is new, but it is West side.  Full throttle is in chelsea at chelsea piers.  They are pretty hard core.  I live tight near there and if I were going to do a team, it would be the choice for me.  They also have some great programs (8 weeks) for improving biking and running at CP.  You don't have to be a member of the tri club or health club to do them.  I wish I had time for a club, but I train on my own since I could never make it to the workouts with my work and kids.

Where can I learn more about any of the training clubs that might be near me (West 42nd Street on the Hudson River)?  I'm an athlete but never done a full tri before, and would love to meet people nearby for weekly workouts - running, biking, swimming.  I've got 'til July 8 to get myself in tri shape and could use all the help I can get

Is Empire Tri the "artist formerly known as SBR Tri Team"? I think that team was trying to change their name or something, because they had originally called themselves "NYC TRI" and they got sued by the RD of the NYC triathlon.

For starters, just look for the websites of the various clubs/teams mentioned here and reach out to them. Figure out what kind of commitment they’re looking for (time and money) and whether that fits with what you want. Some clubs are very structured and others are much less so. Make sure you find one that suits you. Also, make sure you like the team uniform, since you’ll be forced to wear it to every local event for the rest of your life….

Honestly, and this is just my opinion, if you’re already athletic, as long as your goals aren’t too lofty (like, “I want to win my age group”), you can find all the information you need to train and prepare for your first race just by frequenting this site, reading the forums and the race reports and asking tons of questions.

Other than a couple of training partners I run and bike with occasionally, I have always trained almost exclusively by myself, even when I started out. The team/club I’m in is mostly for social events and so that I can have more people cheering for me at local races.

Good luck! Looks like you'll be racing the NYC tri, right? See you there.

Asphalt Green Tri club has a training plan and group workouts specifically geared to the NYC Tri -

The group workouts are mostly in CP though indoor stuff happens at AG.

The city is not that big....pick the club that has the right feel  for you.

Terrier Tri I believe is west side based. Tri Life is all over but race specific plans.

I live on the west side and for Tris am with AG - best pools in NY are Asphalt Green and Chelsea Piers

Asphalt Green is opening a second location downtown on Murray St (@ West St.).  Was supposed to be opening Jan. 1 but waiting for city permits has pushed that estimate back to Feb 1.  This will have a 6-lane 25 yd pool and will have a triathlon team and a masters swimming team.

From what I understand, Tri team members at both facilities will belong to the same team, just different training locations.
