Subject: 105 vs ultegra
I am looking at upgrading from a triple up front to a double so i am taking all my components off and adding double capable stuff...that said is ultegra really worth the cost over the 105 stuff...i have ultegra in the back and its nice, but i want to know if it is worth the cost. I am looking at front and rear deraileurs and the cassette if i go with the ultegra other wise just the front and rear deraileurs. Please let me know what you think.

I'm actually thinking of doing the same thing... some of the bike dudes I talked to about this told me it would not be a measureable difference in the front chainring... If I wanted to create a measureable difference in my shifting, I'd be better off changing my "flight deck" controls...upgrading from 105's to Ultegra.... and I think that's what I'm going to do... FWIW...Whizzzzzzzzzzzzz

Here's my 2 cents.  The bike shop guys are right.  There is vertually no measurable differences between Ultegra and 105, at least not to justify the retail price difference.  If you were to compare Ultegra to Tiagra or Sora (two even cheaper component groups) then I would say Yes, there is a difference.  I doubt you would be able to tell the difference between Ultegra & 105.

I'll offer up my two cents as a mechanic, and experienced rider...a cassette is a casette, and a 105 rear derailleur will work almost as well as Ultegra.  Even the cranks are close.  BUT...an Ultegra front derailleur is a HUGE improvement over 105.  It's just more reliable once it is set up, and more precise.  Rarely will you end up dropping a chain with Ultegra.

DO NOT skimp on the front derailleurs!!!  Ever.  Is a shifting problem worth the relatively small cost of the upgrade?
