Total Time = 3h 00m 18s
Overall Rank = 377/474
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 63/75
Pre-race routine:

Drank a fruit smoothie, had a bowl of Grape Nuts & raisins w/vanilla soy about 4:30 am. Whole wheat bagel just prior to race. A propel and bottle of water.
Event warmup:

Just stretched and chatted with Peter who I met at UNC Wellness earlier in the year.
Swim
  • 32m 34s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

I literally did not swim since UNC Wellness Super Sprint and that was like 450 yards, which was probably the only time I swam since Mission Man, July 31. I set out to go slow and easy and did fine... breast stroked a few times and snagged the foot of a guy going the wrong direction in hopes he would stop and turn around. I felt good until I got out of the water and my sides hurt so bad, I thought of walking into T1... but everyone else was running so I ran into T1, too.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 1
  • 04m 8s
Comments:

I was so worked from the swim, not to mention my week-long head cold, I thought about quitting. I took my time here to re-group, drink some Propel and try a PowerBar but I couldn't swallow it. Then I heard people cheering at the exit so I got it together and ran out with my bike.
What would you do differently?:

I rated this good b/c I did what I had to stay in the race, albeit a slow T1.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 25s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.54 mile/hr
Comments:

I really resolved to stay in the middle ring and save myself for the run since I was hurting so bad from the swim. But once I got to 10 miles... I just decided to give it all I had and I really broke loose and passed a lot of people. My bike computer was busted but I think I probably averaged 16-17 (what I normally ride in the middle ring) the first ten miles then 19-20 what I normally ride in the big ring) that last 10 or so. Great second half ride and the course was not nearly as tough as people say.
Transition 2
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Again, I could have been in and out much faster, but I was worked from the swim and bike. I stood around and ate a banana until I saw Peter come in and motivate me to get out on the run!
Run
  • 1h 00m 38s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I did the 10k at Kerr Lake in 57 minutes run/walking the entire time. I really trained for this 10k above all else and was just blasted by all the short little hills. Could have been my head-cold just finally beating me down after the first three miles which I ran straight through, but then I started walking and that was the beginning of the end. I gave all I had though and just couldn't run this any faster than I did.
What would you do differently?:

Be more prepared for the swim and bike and stay healthy.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad head cold for the past week.

Nice job Joe on your finish.  Congrats on your race.  Sorry that you had to deal with a week of head cold.  I'm definitely going to have to come visit Pinehurst next year.  From everyone's RR it sounds like an awesome race.

Way to go!  That run is a killer I tell ya.

Next year we'll have to hook up at one of the races and compare notes!  Have a great off-season

Joe, great race! That run just killed me! You dug deep to finish as well as you did considering a freakin head cold! I hope to meet you at some event next season. We will both crush that run at Pinehurst next year!!!

Congrats!!
